Outcome Based Education (OBE) is a student-centered instructional approach that focuses on measuring student performance through defined outcomes such as knowledge, skills, and attitudes. It aims to prepare students for the demands of a rapidly changing workplace by emphasizing competencies and understanding fundamentals. Key components of OBE include Program Educational Objectives (PEOs), Program Outcomes (POs), and Course Outcomes (COs), which guide the educational process and assessment of student achievements.

Outcome Based Education(OBE)

What is outcome based Education?

 Outcome based education is student centered instruction that
focuses on measuring student performance i.e. outcomes.
 Outcomes include
• knowledge
• Skills
• Attitudes
Why outcome based Education??
Globalization has brought in a clear shift from education as
transmission of expert knowledge to education as building learner
competencies
That means focus will have to be on Understanding fundamentals
very well
 learning new skills/competencies to cope with the demands of the
rapidly changing workplace.
Prepare global engineers who will have to solve problems and
challenges
Outcome based education
emphasizes on
Stating what you want your students to be able to do at the end of
the program?
 Assessing the students whether they are able to do what they are
expected to do
 Orienting teaching and other academic processes to facilitate
students to do what they are expected to do
Important Terms Used in OBE
Vision, Mission Statements of the Department
Program Educational Objectives (PEOs)
Program Outcomes (PO)
Course Outcomes
Assessment
Vision, Mission Statements of the Department
Vision
To achieve academic and research excellence in essential technologies of
Computer Science and Engineering by promoting a creative environment
for learning and innovation.
Mission
To provide dynamic, innovative and flexible curriculum which equip the
students with the necessary, problem driven skills to strengthen their
career prospects and potential to pursue higher studies.
To foster inquisitive-driven research among students and staff so as to
reinforce the domain knowledge and address contemporary societal issues.
To inculcate ethical values, leadership qualities and professional behavior
skills for improving the living standards of people
DEFINITIONS OF PEO, PSO, PO,CO
 Educational Objectives (PEOs): Programme Educational Objectives are a set of broad future
focused student performance outcomes that explicitly identify what students will be able to
do with what they have learned, and what they will be like after they leave school and are
living full and productive lives. Thus PEOs are what the programme is preparing graduates for
in their career and professional life.
 Programme Outcomes (POs): Programme Outcomes are a set of narrow statements that
describes what students (learners) of the programme are expected to know and be able to
perform or attain by the time of post graduation.
 Programme Specific Outcomes (PSOs): Programme Outcomes are a set of narrow statements
that describes what students (learners) of a particular specialization of the programme are
expected to know and be able to perform or attain by the time of post graduation. PSOs are
also a function of the various course combinations offered by the Institute.
 Course Outcomes (COs): A set of specific statements that describes the complex performances
a student should be capable of as a result of learning experiences within a course.
PEOs(Program Educational
Objectives)
1. Program Educational Objectives (PEOs) are the statements that describe the expected
achievements of graduates within first few years of their graduation from the program
2. To enable the students with innovative applications of engineering knowledge and
programming skills to spearhead the progress of society in the information age.
3. To mould the students into competent, successful, and practicing engineers in their
career and/or in pursuing their higher studies through the spirit of innovation and
entrepreneurship.
4. To provide exposure to cutting edge technologies, adequate training and opportunities
to work individually and as teams on multidisciplinary projects with effective analytical
skills.
5. To acquire and practice the profession with ethics, integrity and leadership qualities
Program outcomes
POs are statements about the knowledge, skills and attitudes
(attributes) the graduate of formal engineering program should have
POs are defined by Accreditation Agencies of the country (NBA in
India)
Program outcomes
Engineering Graduates will be able to:
1. Engineering knowledge: Apply the knowledge of mathematics, science, engineering fundamentals, and an engineering specialization to the
solution of complex engineering problems.
2. Problem analysis: Identify, formulate, review research literature, and analyze complex engineering problems reaching substantiated conclusions
using first principles of mathematics, natural sciences, and engineering sciences.
3. Design/development of solutions: Design solutions for complex engineering problems and design system components or processes that meet
the specified needs with appropriate consideration for the public health and safety, and the cultural, societal, and environmental
considerations.
4. Conduct investigations of complex problems: Use research-based knowledge and research methods including design of experiments, analysis
and interpretation of data, and synthesis of the information to provide valid conclusions.
5. Modern tool usage: Create, select, and apply appropriate techniques, resources, and modern engineering and IT tools including prediction and
modeling to complex engineering activities with an understanding of the limitations.
6. The engineer and society: Apply reasoning informed by the contextual knowledge to assess societal, health, safety, legal and cultural issues and
the consequent responsibilities relevant to the professional engineering practice.
7. Environment and sustainability: Understand the impact of the professional engineering solutions in societal and environmental contexts, and
demonstrate the knowledge of, and need for sustainable development.
8. Ethics: Apply ethical principles and commit to professional ethics and responsibilities and norms of the engineering practice..
9. Individual and team work: Function effectively as an individual, and as a member or leader in diverse teams, and in multidisciplinary settings.
10. Communication: Communicate effectively on complex engineering activities with the engineering community and with society at large, such as,
being able to comprehend and write effective reports and design documentation, make effective presentations, and give and receive clear
instructions.
11. Project management and finance: Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of the engineering and management principles and apply these
to one’s own work, as a member and leader in a team, to manage projects and in multidisciplinary environments.
12. Life-long learning: Recognize the need for, and have the preparation and ability to engage in independent and life-long learning in the broadest
Program Specific Outcomes (PSOs)
• Apply the Knowledge of Programming Languages, Networks and
Databases for development of Software Applications.

• Identify, Analyze, Formulate and Solve Real Time Complex Engineering

Problems.

• Design, Implement and Deploy a Quality Based Software System to

meet the Evolving needs.
