Plant Animal Cells

The document compares and contrasts the structure and function of major organelles in plant and animal cells, highlighting differences such as the presence of cell walls and chloroplasts in plant cells. It describes the roles of various organelles including the nucleus, mitochondria, and vacuoles. Additionally, it provides resources for further exploration of the topic.

Animal Cells
Organelles and their functions
Learning Goal:
SC.6.L.14.4
Compare and contrast the structure and function of major
organelles of plant and animal cells, including cell wall, cell
membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria, and
vacuoles.

Cells are composed of
organelles
What are Organelles?
• Organelles are structures inside cells that perform various
specialized jobs to keep the cell functioning

Let’s take a look at some of the types of organelles found

in plant and animal cells!
• A thin layer surrounding the cell that controls what

Cell •
moves in and out of the cell
Found in plant AND animal cells

Membrane
• Cell membranes are semi-permeable
• Only certain contents can move through the
cell membrane
Cell Wall
• Firm layer outside of the
cell membrane that gives
the cell structure
• Found in plant cells, but
NOT animal cells
• Gives plant cells
their
square/rectangular
shape
Nucleus
• The “brain” of a cell that
contains the genetic
information of the cell and
acts as a control center
• Found in plant AND animal
cells
• Typically, near the
center of the cell
• Contains the
nucleolus where
ribosomes (proteins
containing genetic
codes) are made
Chloroplasts
• Organelles that turn energy
from the sun into chemical
energy that can be used by the
cell
• Found in plant cells, but NOT
animal cells

• Large “storage unit” that contains water and helps shape

the cell
Large •

Found in plant cells, but NOT animal cells
Animal cells also have vacuoles, but they are much

Vacuole smaller and don’t contribute to the shape of the cell

• When plants looked withered or droopy, it’s because
there is not much fluid inside the vacuole
Cytoplas
m
• Gel-like fluid that fills the
inside of a cell
• Found in plant AND animal
cells
• Helps maintain the
cell’s shape and keep
organelles in place
• Organelle where cellular
respiration takes place in order to

Mitochondria produce energy

• Found in plant AND animal cells
• “powerhouse” of the cell
