Plant Animal Cells
Plant Animal Cells
Animal Cells
Organelles and their functions
Learning Goal:
SC.6.L.14.4
Compare and contrast the structure and function of major
organelles of plant and animal cells, including cell wall, cell
membrane, nucleus, cytoplasm, chloroplasts, mitochondria, and
vacuoles.
What do you notice about these cells? Write down 3 similarities or differences you notice

Cell •
moves in and out of the cell
Found in plant AND animal cells
Membrane
• Cell membranes are semi-permeable
• Only certain contents can move through the
cell membrane
Cell Wall
• Firm layer outside of the
cell membrane that gives
the cell structure
• Found in plant cells, but
NOT animal cells
• Gives plant cells
their
square/rectangular
shape
Nucleus
• The “brain” of a cell that
contains the genetic
information of the cell and
acts as a control center
• Found in plant AND animal
cells
• Typically, near the
center of the cell
• Contains the
nucleolus where
ribosomes (proteins
containing genetic
codes) are made
Chloroplasts
• Organelles that turn energy
from the sun into chemical
energy that can be used by the
cell
• Found in plant cells, but NOT
animal cells
