AIMS & OBJECTIVES: RESULTS: Of the 857 donors, 170(20%) were A group donors, 272(32%) B, 370(43%) O and 44(5%) were
The aim of the study is to find the effect of donor age and blood group on of AB group. One donor was Bombay group. Most of our donors(62%) were in the age group of 18-30
hemoglobin levels in Indian donors. A recent study has reported a years. The mean hemoglobin was 14.4 g/dl. The mean (+/- 1 SD) of hemoglobin for A group is 14.44g/dl
significantly higher hemoglobin in blood group B compared to group A (13.37-15.57), 14.43(13.3-15.56) for B group, 14.59 (13.44-15.74) for O group and 14.47 g/dl (13.29-
donors in Germany.(1) 15.65) for AB group. There was no statistically significant difference among the donors of different
blood groups with and without age adjustment. However there was a statistically significant decrease in
METHODS: hemoglobin with age. This can be explained by the fact that as Testosterone decreases with age,

CONCLUSION: The present study shows that there is no statistically significant difference in hemoglobin level of different blood groups with and
269 without age adjustment among whole blood donors in India. Young donors having a higher hemoglobin level may be preferred over elder donors which
may result in higher hemoglobin level post transfusion. However, small sample size & inclusion of only male donors may affect the outcome.
