Assessment and evaluation
• Evaluation – the act of considering or examining something, like the
teaching and learning process in health care education, judge the value, quality or importance of a thing or an endeavour • - basis is usually through grades that are given to students • Assessment- is designed to help the teacher find out how much and how well the students are learning • - concerned with the different approaches that measure educational effectiveness basically to provide feedback without any intent to give a grade. Learning assessment of students Factors which make Evaluation of student learning quite difficult 1. Differences that exist between simulated setting 2. Time of more than a few days that has lapsed Some techniques used for classroom assessment 1. One minute paper- usually used during the last three minutes of the class 2. Muddiest point- teacher ask what was the muddiest (most unclear) point in today’s lesson 3. Directed paraphrasing- student to “state in their own words” 4. Application cards- note down on the index card one possible application of any principle, theory or new information that has been recently taught by the instructor. Method of evaluation of student learning 1. Multiple choice 2. True or false question 3. Matching question 4. Essay type question 1. Multiple choice question • Most commonly used in nursing licensure and certification examination because they are often easy to score manually and by computer. • Uses multilogical thinking in answering the multiple choice items, critical thinking can be tested. Two parts of multiple choice 1. stem- question itself, can be worded as a question and incomplete statement 2. Options- possible answers or solution 3. Answer- the correct option 4. Distracters- the incorrect options 2. True-false question • Test the lowest levels of learning which are knowledge and comprehension 3. Matching type question • Lowest level of knowing which test knowledge, specifically recall of the relationships between two things such as dates and event, structures and functions, terms and their definition 4. Essay type question • Test the highest levels of knowing which are analysis, synthesis and evaluation
2 types of essay question
1. Restricted response items or short answer question 2. Extended response question or full essay questions 2 approaches in scoring essay question 1. Point method- also called analytic method 2. Rubric method of scoring- also called holistic method of scoring Learning assessment of patient/clients • Most important outcome of patient teaching is a change in health-related behavior and how these are applied to attain healthy lifestyle and wellness. • Testing psychomotor skills 5 types of evaluation 1. Process (formative) evaluation- adjustments are made in an educational activity as soon as they are needed 2. Content evaluation- acquired the knowledge and skills 3. Outcome (summative)evaluation- effects or outcomes of the teaching efforts and “sum up” 4. Impact evaluation- effects of the educational program on the institution or the community 5. Program evaluation-judge and improve the worth of some object like an educational program
