INTRODUCTION
The Shivappa Nayaka Palace, located on the banks of the
Tunga River in Shivamogga, Karnataka, is an enduring
symbol of the Keladi Nayaka dynasty’s legacy.
Named after Shivappa Nayaka, an able ruler and
administrator of the Keladi dynasty, this palace reflects
the grandeur of a bygone era.
 The Keladi Nayakas were initially vassals under the
Vijayanagara Empire but rose to prominence after its
decline.
HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE

• Rise of Shivappa Nayaka: Shivappa ascended the throne in 1645,


establishing himself as a formidable ruler
• Military Exploits: He expanded his kingdom by eliminating threats from
the Portuguese and capturing territories like Mangalore, Kundapura, and
Honnavar.
• Conflict with the Bijapur Sultanate: Shivappa Nayaka captured areas in
Dharwad and laid siege to Srirangapatna.
• Governance: Introduced the revenue system called ‘Sist’ which enhanced
economic stability.
• Legacy of Tolerance: His fair governance earned him the loyalty of his
subjects.
ARCHITECTURAL
HIGHLIGHTS
The palace is made almost entirely of rosewood, with intricately carved
wooden pillars and motifs adorning the structure.
It has a Durbar Hall (noble court) with massive wooden columns and
arched panels, used for administrative purposes.
Two-Storied Design: The living quarters on the upper level feature
balconies overlooking the Durbar Hall.
 Despite its simplicity, the architectural design reflects the artistic skill
of the era.
