NATURE AND BACKGROUND

What is Arnis?

• Arnis is a stick fighting sport considered as the Philippines’ national sport. The Arnis player is called
“Arnisadors”. Arnis competitions involve strategically striking targets to earn points. Stick work is a great
foundation for developing skills in weapons training. Physical fitness like hand-eye coordination, agility,
speed, control, and body mechanics are the most important criteria in determining the physiological capacity
in Arnis. This fundamental stepping stone cultivates the attributes of angling, footwork, distancing, and
offensive/defensive strategy (International Martial Arts).
• Also know a Filipino martial art that can be performed individually or with a partner using a single stick or a
pair of sticks for striking and blocking; can also be used for self-defense.

NATURE AND BACKGROUND

• Arnis, also known as Eskrima or Kali, was officially recognized by the Philippine government and included in
the Republic Act No. 9850, which was signed into law on December 11, 2009. This act declared Arnis as the
national martial art and sport of the Philippines and was signed into law by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo
• Historically, Arnis incorporated three related methods: “espada y daga” (sword and dagger), which employs a
long blade and short dagger; “solo baston” (single stick); and “sinawali” (to weave), which uses two sticks of
equal length twirled in “weaving” fashion for blocking and striking.
• Arnis Organization in the Philippines is PEKAF

and uncle at the age of six. By the age of fourteen he had his first
stick fighting match with a Sinawali master that Presas knocked out
