Defining Drama
• A drama play is a form of literature written
by a playwright, usually consisting of
dialogue between characters and is
intended for theatrical performance rather
than just reading in front of an audience or
a group of audience.

• It is a composition in prose form that
presents a story entirely told in dialogue
and action and written with the intention
of its eventual performance before an
audience.

• Drama comes from Greek words “dran” meaning "to
do" or "to act."
• It also referred to as “stage play”.
• It is a prose or verse composition, especially one telling
a serious story that was intended for representation by
actors impersonating the characters and performing
the dialogue and action and a serious narrative work or
program for television, radio, or the cinema.

• This usually involves a conflict between the main
character who is the protagonist, the antagonist,
and the supporting characters.
• Drama comes in different types or genres, the
popular ones during the ancient times in Greece
were comedy and tragedy.
• Drama is defined by Aristotle as “a criticism of life,
on a stage, with action, characters and dialogue.”

• Drama has a two-fold nature: LITERATURE and
THEATRE.
• Performed at a variety of levels.
• Considered the type of literature that takes
advantage of people’s visual and auditory senses.
• Not limited to what you read and imagine like in a
poetry and fiction, but it brings your imagination to
life.

• It shows people going through some
eventful period in their lives, seriously
or humorously the speech and action
of a play recreate the flow of human
life, which come fully to life only on the
stage.

• According to scholars, the first forms of
drama originated in Greece at about 2500
years ago, and it evolved from being simple
choral readings in humble platforms to
complete theatrical productions that
involve elaborate sets and dozens of fully
made up actors with fantastic costumes.
Difference Between Drama
and Theater
• Drama is the actual written material or the
script.
• The theater is from the Greek word
“theastai” which means to behold.
• It is the actual production and is the
enactment and interpretation of the
written material.
Drama Play Then and Now
• In the olden days, the drama was
written in a fixed formula.
• Exposition is usually showed during the
first act, the second depicts advanced
complications, the third brought crisis
and the last part showcased resolution.
Drama Play Then and Now
• Nowadays, writers usually go outside
of the box and no longer adhere to this
formula. They are now focused on the
readers and audience in mind. In a way,
the reader becomes the director of the
drama.
