COMPUTER SKILLS FUNDAMENTALS I

 Lab Practical: Starts 2nd Week
 Please interrupt with questions at any time
Class Management
 Arrive on time. The door is closed 5 minutes before class
 Attendance is almost compulsory. Students sign off for every lecturer
and lab/tutorial.
 Attendance will be recorded in every lab practical
 If you need a laptop, tablet, or any other device for taking notes or
participating in class, that is fine. However, please do not use a personal
device for any purpose unrelated to our class. Cell phones should be put
away and powered down, except when there is a serious need to leave
your cell phone on, such as a family emergency, please put it on vibrate
and let me know. If you ignore the above, I will count you as absent.
 The use of social media during lectures or tutorials/labs is not permitted.
 Inform course facilitators and present an excuse (valid reason) in
advance if you must leave during the lab practical.
 You shall nominate your own class rep

Course Rationale
1) This is a general introductory course to the computer
system environment and teaches problem-solving
with the help of computing technology

2) It enables with the emphasis on practical hands-on


experience.

3) It teaches students;
 Basic computer skills
 Use of Word processor & PowerPoint
 Electronic communications – email
 Internet facilities etc.

Course Rationale
1) It will give students an appreciation of computer
applications’ potential, limitations, impacts and social
issues.

2) With an emphasis on equipping students with the


basic computing or ICT skills required for academic
work in the university and general life.

Course goals

1) This module’s goals are;


 Introduce computers and information systems
 Hands-on experience in the use of computing
technology
 Understanding of fundamental concepts of H/W & S/W
 Equip students with basic computing skills

Lecture schedule

1 Will shall have 14 teaching weeks. The summary


of topics to be covered refers to the course
outline uploaded on the Moodle site.

2) Laboratory practical are key for the success of


this course. It is mandatory for each student to
attend and actively participate on all activities in
the lab session.

Course Assessment
1 Quizzes (10%): There are two online quizzes in Week 3 & 10.
Each quiz weighs 5% towards the continuous assessment mark
(50%)

2) Mid-semester Theory Test (15%): The test will be conducted in


week 7 as per the faculty calendar.

3) Practical Test (10%): Conducted in the Lab session (word


processor)

4) Group Assignment (15%): Conducted in the Lab sessions in


weeks 12-13. Groups consist of 5 students each.

5) Final exams (50%): During the University’s examination period.
