Resources and Development

Class 10 Geography – Chapter 1

What are Resources?

• Everything available in our environment that

can satisfy human needs.
• Becomes a resource when it is technologically
accessible, economically feasible, and
culturally acceptable.
• Examples: Water, minerals, forests, fossil fuels.
Classification of Resources

• On the Basis of Origin: Biotic, Abiotic

• On the Basis of Exhaustibility: Renewable,
Non-renewable
• On the Basis of Ownership: Individual,
Community, National, International
• On the Basis of Status of Development:
Potential, Developed, Stock, Reserves
Understanding Each Type with
Examples

• Biotic: Forests, Cattle

• Abiotic: Land, Water
• Renewable: Wind, Solar
• Non-renewable: Oil, Coal
Why Develop Resources?

• Resources are not equally distributed.

• Development helps in economic growth and
reducing regional imbalances.
• Need for sustainable development due to
overexploitation.
Sustainable Development

• Development that meets present needs

without compromising future generations.
• Gandhiji: 'There is enough for everybody’s
need and not for anybody’s greed.'
• Balance between development and
conservation.
Resource Planning in India

• Resource planning = identifying + proper

usage + conservation
• Steps Involved:
• 1. Identification and inventory of resources
• 2. Evolving planning structure
• 3. Matching resource development plans with
national development
Uneven Distribution of Resources
in India

• Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh: Rich in minerals

• Arunachal Pradesh: Poor infrastructure
• Rajasthan: Solar & wind potential but lacks
water
• Leads to regional imbalance
Land Resources in India

• Land is a natural resource, important for

agriculture, forestry, mining, etc.
• India has varied landforms: plains (43%),
mountains (30%), plateaus (27%).
Land Use Pattern

• Forests, land not available for cultivation,

fallow land, net sown area, etc.
• Shown using pie charts or bar graphs in
textbook.
Land Degradation & Conservation

• Causes: Deforestation, overgrazing, mining,

industrial effluents.
• Measures: Afforestation, Controlled grazing,
Check dams, Organic farming
Soil – A Vital Resource

• Formed by weathering of rocks.

• Factors: Parent rock, climate, relief, flora &
fauna, time.
• Essential for agriculture and life.
Types of Soils

• Alluvial, Black, Red & Yellow, Laterite, Arid,

Forest Soil
• Each suitable for different crops and regions.
Soil Erosion & Conservation

• Causes: Wind, water, deforestation,

overgrazing.
• Conservation: Contour ploughing, terrace
farming, strip cropping, shelter belts
Important Terms

• Biotic, Abiotic, Sustainable Development,

Resource Planning, Soil Erosion, Land
Degradation
• Short definitions covered in class/textbook.
Recap and Practice Questions

• Quick summary of key topics covered.

• Sample questions:
• 1. What is sustainable development?
• 2. Name any two types of resources on the
basis of origin.
• 3. What are the causes of land degradation?
