In this presentation, we will
explore the different types of
cables, their advantages and
disadvantages and
uses.Additionally, we will also
look at how these cables are
used in various network
environments.
Types of
Cables
There are several types of cables
but they can all be classified into 5
types. These are:
● Shielded Cables
● Ribbon Electric Cables
● Twisted Pair Cables
● Coaxial Cables
● Fibre Optic Cables
Ribbon
Electric Cables
Ribbon Electric Cables consist of multiple
insulated wires running parallel with one
another and is used for transmission of
multiple data simultaneously. For example,
this is used to connect the CPU with the
motherboard and is generally used for the
interconnection of networking devices.
Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages Disadvantages

● Better solution to congested ● No control over how the

pathways ribbon is placed inside the
● Efficency and cost savings cable
● Quicker time to restoration ● Can't bend in all directions
● Quicker time to market
Fibre
Optic
Cables
Fibre Optic Cables are cables which transport
optical data signals from an attached light source to
the receiving device. Fibre Optic Cables can be
used in a wide variety of applications.Fiber optics
are used for long-distance and high-performance
data networking. They are also commonly used in
telecommunication services, such as internet,
television and telephones.
Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages Disadvantages

● Thin and lightweight ● Can't be bent at sharp angles

● Improved reliability ● Difficult to splice
● Low maintenance ● Highly susceptible
● Longer distances ● Extremely fragile
Twisted Pair
Cables
Twisted Pair Cables have two or more insulated
copper wires which are twisted with each other
and are colour-coded. These types of wires are
usually used in telephone cables and the
resistance to external interference can be
measured by the number of wires.
This type of cable has two different forms. They are :

● Shielded Twisted Pair Cables

● Unshielded Twisted Pair Cables

UTP : Unshielded twisted pair (UTP) is a ubiquitous type of copper

cabling used in telephone wiring and local area networks (LANs). The
five types of UTP cables are identified with the prefix CAT, as in
category, each supporting a different amount of bandwidth.

STP : Shielded twisted pair (STP) is a special kind of copper telephone

and local area network (LAN) wiring used in some business
installations. It adds an outer covering or shield that functions as a
ground to ordinary twisted pair wiring.
* STP cables are the same as shielded cable
Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages Disadvantages

● It is less expensive ● Provides poor security

● Easy to connect ● Low durability ( Must be
● Very flexible maintained regularly)
● Breakage doesn't affect the ● Breaks easily
whole network
Coaxial
Cables
Coaxial Cables consist of solid copper
or steel conductor plated with copper
which is enclosed in the metallic braid
and metallic tape. This is entirely
covered with an insulated protective
outer jacket. These types of cables are
used for computer networking and
audio-video networking.
Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages Disadvantages

● It is very durable ● Long-distance signal loss is

● Best performance in short- serious
distance transmission ● Signal leakage at the
connection
● Speed fluctuation under
heavy use
Shielded
Cables
Shielded Cables consist of 1 or 2 insulated wires
which are covered by a woven braided shield or
aluminium Mylar foil for better signal transmission and
removing irregularities in the frequency of power and
external interference in radio. These cables transmit
high voltage electric current and are protected by a
shield.
Advantages and Disadvantages

Advantages Disadvantages

● Provides protection from ● More expensive

interference ● Can only be connected on
● Can be easily terminated the ground
● Gives better electrical ● Difficult to maintain
characteristics than ● Is not very flexible
unshielded cables ● Difficult to install
