LITERATURE REVIEWS
1. Allison Rose Wilson, University of Oregon, 2012 in Turkish Journal of Agriculture and Forestry 48 (3), 344-353, 2024 on Comparative analysis
of closed hydroponic systems and planting seasons for Lettuces and Urban food growth: Designing for vertical building surfaces. This thesis
attempts to determine if food-producing plant growth can be incorporated within a building envelope to create an ideal plant growth environment
while simultaneously enhancing the thermal properties of the building envelope. A window system was designed as a means of bringing food
production into the built environment in an easily accessible fashion from the interior of a high-rise apartment complex. The Ya-Po-Ah Terrace in
Eugene, Oregon, was chosen as a case study site for research on how a window could promote health, provide nutrition, and enhance the thermal
comfort of the inhabitants. The design of the window unit is founded in precedent research on methods of plant growth in urban environments
and systems for growing food in small and efficient ways. The design found that it is possible to create an ideal plant growth environment within
a building assembly for use as a food production method for building inhabitants. The potential for combining living wall and vertical farming

2. Mohammed Khandaker, Benz Kotzen, Aquaculture research 49 (4), 1454-1468, 2018 on The potential for combining living wall and vertical
farming systems with aquaponics with special emphasis on substrates. Aquaponics is a method of food production, growing fish and vegetables
in a recirculating aquaculture system. Aquaponics uses the water from the fish to feed the plants in a totally natural way and like hydroponics,
aquaponics is considered to be more sustainable as more plants can be grown per square meter compared to normal agriculture. However, as is
the case with normal agriculture, in aquaponics plants are grown within horizontally. In aquaponics, using the UVI system, the ratio between fish
tanks:filters:plant tanks is 2:1:5 which means that the plant tanks are occupying close to half of the production space. In order to reduce the
spatial requirement for plants, which would make production even more sustainable, this research investigates aspects of combining living wall
and vertical farming technologies in aquaponics. It is considered that by growing the plants vertically less space would be required. In this
research living wall system is investigated but the main focus is on the potentials of using various inert substrates in the living wall systems for
vertical aquaponics. The results showed that a pot system performs better in terms of management of the systems. With regard to substrates,
horticultural grade coconut fibre and horticultural grade mineral wool outperformed other substrates.

SUMMARY AND CONCLUSION
Summary: The NFT (Nutrient Film Technique) vertical wall-mounted hydroponic system is a modern
agricultural approach designed to grow mint plants efficiently. In this system, a thin film of nutrient-
rich water flows over the plant roots, providing them with necessary nutrients while minimizing water
usage. The vertical design maximizes space, making it ideal for urban settings or small spaces. Mint
plants are chosen for their suitability to hydroponics due to their fast growth and high market
demand.
Conclusion: The NFT vertical wall-mounted hydroponic system proves to be an effective and
sustainable method for growing mint. It offers advantages such as reduced water consumption,
faster growth rates, and minimal space requirements. This system can contribute to urban
agriculture and sustainable farming practices, making it a viable option for home growers and
commercial setups alike.
