GOLDEN RULES for Contact-Thermometers

• Every contact-thermometer can only measure the temperature
of the primary element (e.g. RTD like Pt100)

• So, a thermometer must be designed in such a way

that it allows an energy transport:
• from the medium to the primary element (T Process >T Ambient ) Heating
• from the primary element to the medium (T Process >T Medium ) Cooling

• In reality, every contact thermometer is also influenced by the

ambient temperature.

• Please consider, the primary element is located somewhere on this

energy path between the process and the environment.

INTERNA Slide
Endress+Hauser TS
L 16
Endress+Hauser TS

Energy Path: Heat Exchange of the Process with the

Environment
Example: Customer was asking for short immersion length (in a steam sterilization
process)

• But the flange outside surface is cooled by convection of air.

• This influences the inner side by heat

conduction inside the metallic flange. T Ambient

• So the inner side of the flange 

can not be at T Process .

• Consequently a temperature gradient

inside the entire thermometer including T 
Process
the sensor in a thermowell is remaining.

HOW TO increase the insertion length  decreasing deviations

• Especially in small pipes, you will always find an

elbow in a piping system, this gives you space 
to place a longer thermowell  .

• If not, the -best method is to
mount the nozzle at an angle.

• But increasing the length will change the

resonance frequency of the assembly,

Does heat conductive paste help?

YES, but not for long!

• After a while, especially if using at “high” temperatures
the paste will dry.
• To keep an accelerating effect, the paste must be
replaced frequently?
• But how can you reach the bottom of a thermowell?
Dry grains and crystals block the way. https://www.gesundheitsfrage.net/g/frage/ist-

High Temperature Customized Solutions

Definition:

• Customized products for harsh

applications, e.g. gasifiers, able to
withstand at very high temperatures,
sometimes in combination with pressure,
and very aggressive environments.

Features:

• Increased safety – Purging system

• Special process connections are available
• Special thermowell materials are needed

Product offering / Segmentation – High Temperature

Why purging with inert gas (nitrogen or argon)?

• Ceramics can become porous at high temperature

• Pt-based and W/Rh-based thermocouple wires are very sensitive to
contamination by process gases
• To create a counter-pressure that opposes to this phenomenon

How can it be realized?

• Ppurging= Pprocess * 1,5
• Fluxing (open circuit, classical approach): depends on customer’s
plant layout
• Pressurization (closed circuit, new approach): autonomous
