• He was born in the lakeside town of CALAMBA LAGUNA
• June 19, 1861
• He was the seventh child
• He was named Jose Protacio in honor of Saint Joseph and

• His Godfather was Reverend Father Pedro Casanas.

THE PRIVATE TUTOR: Leon Monroy
parent’s hired private tutors to teach him at home as he
grew older.
Monroy was a former classmate of Rizal’s father.
He taught Rizal Spanish and Latin.
Unfortunately, he did not have a long life, five months later, he
passed away.
His death caused Jose’s parent to send their nine-year-old Jose to
private school in Binan.

Rizal was only 11 yrs. old when he witnessed his mother’s
extraordinary bravery:

The Spaniard arrested Dona Teodora and forced her to walk 50


km. around Laguna.
She was charged and imprisoned for two years without trial for
falsehood leveled against her, particularly an accusation that
she attempted to poison her sister-in-law.
