TELE-NURSING

Telenursing over the phone has been accepted

since the 1970s, but the COVID-19 pandemic
caused a large increase in telehealth visits.
This increase in telehealth visits made nursing
programs start to consider how to add
telehealth to their curriculum and better prepare
nursing students to provide telenursing.
In-person Visits vs. Telehealth Visits

◦In-person Visits is a ◦Telehealth Visits: is a

type of Health care type of Health care service
where care services are
service where all types
completed over the phone,
of care completed in either on the website or
person e.g., surgery, mobile apps e.g., remote
bloodwork, imaging, monitoring,
etc. diagnostic,treatment. etc.
What Is Telenursing?
Telenursing, telehealth, and telemedicine are
sometimes used interchangeably. All three terms refer
to the use of information technology and
telecommunications to provide healthcare, medical
care, and health education services virtually. Yet, the
definitions of each term hold slight differences.
◦Telehealth is the broadest of these definitions.
Telehealth provides medical care, healthcare,
and health education services using information
technology and telecommunications. Telehealth
includes services provided by nurses, doctors,
pharmacists, and other healthcare professionals.
◦Telenursing a subset of telehealth, is the use
of information technology and
telecommunications to provide remote nursing
care. The responsibilities for telehealth
nurse include remote patient monitoring,
collaborating with the healthcare team, and
communicating with patients and their families.
◦Telemedicine refers specifically to
diagnostic and treatment services provided
by advanced practice nurses or doctors. This
type of virtual care can expand healthcare
access to homebound individuals and those
in remote and underserved areas.
Types of Telehealth Nursing Service
Healthcare professionals provide four types of telehealth services: live video
conferencing, asynchronous or store-and-forward technology, remote patient
monitoring, and Mobile Health.
◦Live Video Conferencing: allows providers to meet with
patients and providers virtually using video and audio
from a smartphone or tablet.

◦Store-and-Forward: allows patients and providers to

store health information, such as copies of scans, in a
portal, so other healthcare providers can view it later.
Types of Telehealth Nursing Service
◦Remote Patient Monitoring: allows patients to record their vital
signs with their smartphone or tablet and send the results to
providers. Some companies even offer providers and patients
specialized, secure technology to meet virtually and share health
information electronically. Examples of vital signs that providers
can monitor remotely include blood sugar, blood pressure, blood
oxygen level, and vision screening.

◦Mobile Health or mHealth refers to healthcare provided through

smartphones or other mobile devices. mHealth is any
combination of the previous three types of telehealth.
Telehealth TeleNursing & Telemedicine Benefits

While telehealth has been used for years, the number of visits
skyrocketed during the early days of the COVID-19 pandemic. The
benefits of virtual healthcare became clear, and they include:
◦Improved Access to Care: Telehealth eliminates geographic
barriers and enhances access to healthcare services,
especially for patients in remote areas or those with limited
mobility. It allows nurses to reach patients in their homes and
reduce healthcare disparities.
Telehealth TeleNursing & Telemedicine Benefits

◦Continuity of Care: Telehealth enables continuous

monitoring and follow-up care. Nurses can remotely assess
patients, provide education, review medications, and monitor
progress. This continuity ensures ongoing support and
prevents hospital readmissions.

◦Efficiency: Virtual care optimizes resources by reducing

unnecessary hospital visits and emergency room admissions.
Additionally, it helps manage healthcare capacity, decreases
waiting times, and allows nurses to focus on high-priority
cases.
NURSING
INFORMATION
MANAGEMENT
◦Electronic Health Records (EHRs) or
electronic medical records (EMRs): are
digital versions of a patient's medical history.
EHRs can include treatment plans, laboratory
results, medication information, allergies, and
other relevant health information.
EHR Applications in Nursing Informatics

◦EHRs help streamline care by providing

comprehensive and accessible patient health
records that providers can share securely.

◦Using EHRs, informatics nurses ensure

accurate medication administration to the right
patient, at the right time, and in the right dose.
EHR Benefits
◦Enhanced Data Access: EHRs provide healthcare teams with instant
access to comprehensive patient information and can result in better-
informed clinical decisions. Nurses can review a patient's medical
history, allergies, medication lists, and diagnostic results. Improving the
accessibility of patient information can promote patient safety while
mitigating the risk of medical errors.

◦Communication: EHRs help facilitate effective communication and

collaboration between healthcare providers. Nurses and other
healthcare professionals can electronically share patient information,
care plans, and clinical notes. EHRs can promote care coordination by
enhancing communication while ensuring continuity across various
healthcare settings and disciplines.
EHR Benefits
◦Documentation: EHRs help streamline the
documentation process while saving time on
manually writing patient information. Nurses can
electronically document assessments, interventions,
and outcomes—this can help ensure accuracy while
removing any concerns about legibility. Because
EHRs can help nurses save time on documentation,
they can focus more on direct patient care.
