Pest Control

Annual Training
Policy and Purpose
• Ensure that a fully operating pest control
program is in place
• PC Program primarily prevents pest issues,
then monitors to confirm the program is
working
• Pest issues are serious food safety hazards
• PC Program ensures a pest free operation
External Pest Control
• Vegetation is kept tidy to prevent
harborages
• No areas where standing water can
collect
• External drains are covered
• Buffer zone maintained around building
• Trash compactor area kept clean
• Receiving holes kept clean
Building Pest Control
• All doors, including dock doors are kept
closed when not in use
• Doors are fitted with weather stripping,
etc.
• Pipes running through walls are sealed
• Windows are kept closed or screened
• Wall/floor junctions in good repair
• Clean as you go
Raw Material Pest Control
• All materials are inspected prior to
receiving
• All trailers are inspected prior to
receiving
• Ingredients are inspected and restacked
as necessary after being in the building
30 days
Pest Control Monitoring
• Interior rodent traps checked each week
• Exterior bait stations checked each
month
• Fly killers inspected each week
• Internal Food Safety Inspections look for
pest issues
Location of Monitors
• Internal traps are located on each side of dock doors and
personnel doors. Each is identified by a number above the
trap.

• Bait stations are located 30 to 50 feet apart. Each station


is numbered.

• Flying insect light traps are located throughout the facility.

• Location of monitors are on a schematic in the Pest


Control Binder.
Location of Monitors
• Mouse traps MUST remain in their assigned
locations.

• Effectiveness of traps are reduced if they are


out of place or not flush against the wall.

• Light traps MUST remain plugged in.


Inspection of Monitors
• Third party pest control company checks all
monitoring stations

• Results of checks are provided for review

• Results of inspections are reviewed and


charted to identify trends
Application of Pesticides
• Third party pest control company does all
pesticide applications
General Rules
• Prevent pest ingress into the building

• Verify by monitoring systems and


inspections

• Where pest sightings or activity is


observed, take immediate action to fix the
issue.
Corrective Actions
• Pest activity not directly affecting food
and food contact surfaces:

– Review and trend rodent activity

– Apply pesticide to area where activity


was observed
Corrective Action
• Pest activity directly affecting food and food
contact surfaces:
– Quarantine affected product, equipment or area
– Determine extent of infestation
– Dispose of affected product or packaging
– Thoroughly clean affected area
– Root cause analysis undertaken
– Create corrective actions to ensure the incident
does not occur again
What Can You Do?
• Notify your Supervisor immediately if you see
any pests or evidence of pests in the building.

• Keep lunch room clean

• Keep exterior grounds clean
