LESSON 4.

2:
CHARACTERISTICS OF
EFFECTIVE AND
EFFICIENT
INSTRUCTIONAL
TOOLS
LESSON SUMMARY

In this lesson, we will talk about the

different characteristics of instructional
tools. Efficient ICT instructional
materials are also discussed. Lastly, we
will see how effective these tools in the
preparation of IMs.
LEARNING OUTCOME

Explain the different characteristics

of effective instructional tools.
MOTIVATION QUESTION

Have you tried

preparing IMs? Do you
think using IMs in a
discussion would be
helpful for students’
better understanding?
CHARACTERISTICS OF EFFECTIVE
INSTRUCTIONAL TOOLS:

1. Enhances instructional effectiveness

2. Promotes active learning
3. Develops critical thinking
4. Accommodates different instruction
5. Motivating
6. Multisensory
SIMPLY USING TECHNOLOGY IS NOT ENOUGH
TO LEARN A L ANGUAGE. AN EFFICIENT ICT-
BASED INSTRUCTIONAL MATERIAL IS A WELL-
PL ANNED AND WELL-DESIGNED ONE. THIS
MEANS THAT IT IS IMPORTANT TO PREPARE
THE IMS VERY WELL AND TO ENSURE THAT
THEY ARE DEVELOPED TO MEET THE
LEARNING GOALS OF THE L ANGUAGE CL ASS.

IT IS ALSO HIGHLY RECOMMENDED THAT

TEACHERS MAXIMIZE THE USE OF TEACHER-
MADE WEBSITES, OER (OPEN EDUCATIONAL
RESOURCES), AND SOFTWARE OR MOBILE
APPS TO FACILITATE INTERACTIVE STUDENT
LEARNING BY USING THESE TOOLS TO
SWITCH THE CL ASSROOM ALONG WITH TASK-
BASED L ANGUAGE ACTIVITIES, INTEGRATED
LEARNING CONTENT, AND L ANGUAGE AND
PROJECT-BASED PRODUCTION .
1. ENHANCES INSTRUCTIONAL
EFFECTIVENESS

The instructional content must be capable of encouraging

an increase in the achievement of students in language
classes. All students, including those with special learning
needs and learners at risk, will benefit from the
instructional materials and will be encouraged to illustrate
the expected effects of their language courses. With the
use of technical devices, the progress of students is
monitored and acted upon by individuals involved, such as
teachers, parents, and the school as a whole.
2.PROMOTES ACTIVE LEARNING

It is expected that instructional materials can

help facilitate active learning. Through the
use of interactive technical tools, interest in
learning is increased and the attention of
students is redirected. Through this, students
and teachers can be extremely interested in
the process of learning.

Environment Environment
*Teacher -made instructions * student-centered learning
*Single-sense simulation *Multisensory stimulation
*Single media *Multimedia

*Passive Learning *Active, exploratory , inquiry based
learning
*Factual , knowledge- based * Critical thinking and informed
learning decision-making
*Reactive response * Proactive/planned action
*Isolated, artificial content *Authentic ,real- world content
3. DEVELOPS CRITICAL THINKING

It is important to design and incorporate

technology tools and instructional materials in such
a way that they help to improve critical thinking
skills among learners. The structure and use of
technology will encourage higher-level thinking
abilities, according to Barron et al. (2002). They
also mentioned that certain technical methods are
meant to enhance problem-solving abilities.
4.ACCOMMODATES DIFFERENT
INSTRUCTION

Students have different backgrounds and have various

types of intelligence and learning. In different ways,
they learn. They share their concepts and feelings
differently as well. As a consequence, teaching
materials and resources must enable the instructor to
promote his or her lessons, taking into account the
students' different profiles. With collective learning,
there must also be an opportunity for individual and
independent learning.
5.MOTIVATING

The use of instructional materials is a major support

for teachers to enhance the process of teaching and
learning. It is expected that the use of these
materials can encourage students to pay attention
and actively participate. With the ubiquity and range
of instructional resources available to language
teachers, it is very important to choose the most
suitable and best format to generate motivation for
learners.
6.MULTISENSORY

Preparing for multisensory educational

materials is one of the biggest challenges
for teachers. Multimedia is possible with
the advent of technical tools created by
very good programmers that allow
teachers to simply learn how to use them
to the fullest in teaching their lessons.
