ROUNDING NUMBERS
LESSON OBJECTIVE
• Round whole numbers to the nearest 10, 100, or 1000
• Round decimals to the nearest whole number or one
decimal place.

STRATEGY TO ROUND TO THE NEAREST
100 & 1000
WHEN YOU ARE ROUNDING TO THE NEAREST 100,
LOOK AT THE TENS PLACE.

1. If the number you are rounding has 5,6,7,8 or


9, in the tens place round the number up to the
next hundred.
Example: 365 has 6 in the tens place and is
rounded up to the next hundred, which is 400

2. If the number you are rounding has 0,1,2,3 or


4 in the tens place round the number down.
Example: 320 has 2 in the tens place and so is
rounded down to 300
SIMILARLY, TO ROUND TO THE NEAREST 1000, LOOK AT THE HUNDREDS PLACE.

If 5 or more, round up the thousands place. Ex: 2745 has 7 in the hundreds place and so we
round up to 3000.
ROUNDING TO THE ONES PL ACE (NEAREST WHOLE NUMBER)

When rounding to the ones place, you only care about the part of the number up to the
ones place. So,

1. Check the digit in the tenths place (first place after the decimal point).
• If it is less than 5, keep the digit in the ones place unchanged (i.e. round down)
• If it is equal to or more than 5, add 1 to the digit in the ones place (i.e. round up)
2. Drop all the digits in the number after the ones place.

Ex: Round 1.71, 1.36 and 1.50 to the ones place


Solution:
1.71 ≈ 2 (The tenths place is 7, so we round up to the
next whole number which is 2)
1.36 ≈ 1 (The tenths place is 3, so we round down to the earlier whole number)
ROUNDING TO ONE DECIMAL PLACE
When rounding off to one decimal place (or the tenths place), you only care about the part of
the number up to the tenths place (first place after the decimal point). So,
1. Check the digit in the hundredths place (second place after the decimal point).
• If it is less than 5, keep the digit in the tenths place unchanged (i.e. round down)
• If it is equal to or more than 5, add 1 to the digit in the tenths place (i.e. round up)
2. Drop all the digits in the number after the tenths place.

Ex: Round 1.625, 1.650 and 1.679 to one decimal place


Solution:
• 1.650 ≈ 1.7 (The hundredth place is 5, so we round up)
• 1.679 ≈ 1.7 (The hundredth place is 7, so we round up)
• 1.625 ≈ 1.6 (The hundredth place is 2, which is less than 5, so we round down)

WHERE DO WE USE ROUNDING NUMBERS IN REAL LIFE?

enough money to buy the items in your list.

• Rounding numbers is useful in estimation.
• Can you think where you can use the skills
learnt in rounding numbers in your daily
life?

Now solve this real life problem:


Virat Kohli's batting average in the IPL is
37.84 runs.
a. Round his average to the nearest whole
number.
Answer:
b. Round his average to the nearest ten.
a. 38 runs (as the tenths place is 8, we round up from 37 to
38)
b. 37.8 runs (as the hundredth place is 4, we keep the tenth
place the same)

LET’S SUMMARIZE
• We learnt to round whole numbers to the nearest 10,100 and 1000 and to round decimals numbers
to the nearest whole number or one decimal place.
• If we are rounding to the nearest 10, we look at the ones place. If it is 5 and above, we round up. If
it is less than 5, we round down. Similarly, we use this strategy for rounding to the nearest 100
and 1000.
• To round decimal numbers to the nearest whole number, we look at the tenths place. If it is 5 and
above, we increase the whole number by one. If it is less than 5, we keep the whole number as it
is. Similarly, we use this strategy for rounding to the nearest tenth place.
• Rounding off is a useful skill which we use in our daily lives.
