Introduction
• An election microscope is a microscope that uses
a beam of accelerated electrons as a source of
illumination.
• It is a special type of microscope having of high
resolution of images.
• Able to magnify objects in nanometers.
• It is used to study the structure of tissues, cells, and
organisms.
Types
There are two main types of electron microscope.
1. Transmission Electron microscope (TEM)
2. Scanning Electron microscope (SEM)
• TEM
• It is used to view thin specimens(tissues sections, molecules
etc) through which electrons can pass generating a projection
image.
• SEM
• It depends on the emission of secondary electrons from the
surface of a specimen.

Parts of electron
microscope
1. Election gun
2. Electromagnetic lens
3. Condenser lens
4. Specimen holder
5. Recording system
How does it works?
How does it works?
Applications
• In industry, it is used for quality control and failure
analysis.
• Used to study the structure of different living and
nonliving materials.
• In microbiology, it is used to study of microorganisms
like bacteria and viruses etc.
• Used to detect the fault or weakness of a building
materials.
• To study the Crystal structure of materials
• Adsorption of particles on surface.
Advantages
• Electron microscope can magnifies objects over
500,000x times.
• Materials rarely distorted by preparation.
• Electron microscope allows us to investigate a
greater depth of field.
• It can resolve object up to 200 nm.
Disadvantages
• Electron microscope are expensive.
• Live specimens cannot be observed.
• Electron microscopes are very large in size and
must be operated in special rooms.
• It is expensive to operate.
• As the penetration power of the electron beam is
very low , the specimen should be ultra thin.
