L9 Comparing and Interpreting Datasets

The document explains how to create and interpret back-to-back stem and leaf plots for comparing two datasets, specifically in an educational context with Year 11 Maths classes. It emphasizes the importance of choosing appropriate data displays for accurate comparisons, such as grouped column graphs for categorical data and stem and leaf plots for numerical data. Additionally, it includes examples and exercises for practicing data interpretation and display techniques.

COMPARING AND

INTERPRETING DATASETS
Goal: To be able to create back to back stem and leaf plots and
interpret datasets
BACK TO BACK STEM AND LEAF
PLOTS
Back-to-back stem and leaf plots
allow us to compare two sets of
data on the same graph.
It has a central stem with leaves
on either side.
EXAMPLE
The following data was collected from two Year 11 Maths classes that
completed the same test. The total mark available was 100.
Draw a back to back stem and leaf plot of the data set.
1. Which class performed
better? Give a reason for
your answer
2. How many students score
higher than 85 in each
class?
3. How many students scored
90 on their test?
CHOOSING APPROPRIATE DATA
DISPLAYS
To display similar data sets, using the appropriate display is important to
make correct comparisons of similarities and differences.

A grouped column graph is used when comparing multiple sets of

categorical data.

Back to back stem and leaf plots or dot plots are used to compare
distributions of numerical data.
EXAMPLE
A sample of New South Wales residents were asked to state the environmental
issue that was most important to them. The results were sorted by the age of the
people surveyed. The results were as follows.

1. State the type of data display that you would use to compare this data set.
Side by side column graph
EXAMPLE

2. Construct the data display

EXAMPLE
3. State what number of people surveyed were over 30.
For the response over-30s, there were 32, 45 and 23.

100 people surveyed were over 30.

4. Determine the percentage of under 30s surveyed who listed conserving

water as the most important environmental issue.

Approximately 40% of residents under 30 listed conserving water as the most

important issue.
WORK TO COMPLETE
Exercise 10.7: All questions

It is your responsibility to finish any incomplete work at home.

EXIT PASS

The following graphs show the

number of people in selected
occupations in Victoria.

1. Estimate the total number of

school teachers in Victoria.

2. Which occupation has around

30,000 people above the age
of 40?

3. Estimate how many people

below 40 were surveyed in
