Using NodeMCU and a RFID as an Attendance

The document outlines the development of an RFID-based attendance system using nodeMCU to automate attendance tracking for employees at St. Anne Academy. The system aims to improve accuracy, efficiency, and reliability in attendance management while addressing current practices that rely on manual record-keeping. Progress has been made in several areas, but connectivity issues with 5GHz Wi-Fi have stalled further development until a suitable micro-controller is available.

Using nodeMCU and an

RFID as an Attendance
system for employees
BY: EDIL PATRIC MACAHILAS
INTRODUCTION
Research was conducted in St. Anne Academy.

- CURRENT PRACTICE FOR ATTENDANCE

According to the teachers, they use record books for each attendance and sometimes
doesn’t record their attendance since they’ve known each other for the longest time

- MONITORING

An interview from a teacher says that they don’t monitor each attendance because they
are used to knowing whether they’ll attend or not judging from the usual time of their
arrival.
RFID-BASED ATTENDANCE
SYSTEM
Description – an automatic attendance system that runs by a micro-
controller with a website and a database using PHPMyAdmin and
MySQL. Components that were used are:
RFID-RC522
ESP8266
0.96 Inch OLED Display
Buzzer
Tactile Push Button Switch
Breadboard & Cables
Objective
To automate attendance tracking with RFID technology to ensure
accurate timekeeping and providing real-time monitoring through
an intuitive dashboard for administrators and eliminate manual
errors and improve data reliability in attendance management while
saving time and resources by streamlining the attendance process
with minimal human intervention.
Significance

It offers a fast, secure, and hassle-free way to record attendance for the users
and administrators and simplifies the tracking process and it enables efficient
report generation and ensures data accuracy and increases operational
efficiency while reducing administrative costs and supports scaling for larger
employee or student groups.
- Error rate in logs: <1%.
Accurate Attendance Tracking
- Duplicate entries: <0.5% of total logs.

- System uptime: >99.9%.

Scalability and Reliability - Logs processed per second: >100 under
load.
- Easy to navigate through the website
User-Friendly Experience
- Average tap-in time: under 3 seconds.

- Time to update dashboard after a log: 2

Real-Time Data Updates seconds.
- Log latency: 2 - 5 seconds.

- Connection to Wi-Fi must be 100%

flawless
Connectivity
- Must be able to handle both 2.4ghz &
5ghz Wi-Fi
PROGRESS REPORT.
Accurate Attendance Tracking ACCOMPLISHED
Scalability and Reliability ACCOMPLISHED
User-Friendly Experience STILL NEEDS SOME POLISHING
Real-Time Data Updates ACCOMPLISHED

NOT ACCOMPLISHED
Reason – unable to connect to a 5ghz Wi-Fi
due to the limitations of the ESP8266 not
being able to support 5G Wi-Fi connection.
As of now no micro-controller can connect
to 5G Wi-Fi Except ESP32-C5.
Connectivity
Solution – micro-controller swap. The
ESP32-C5 is expected to be released in
mass production in June 2025. the project
will be on hiatus until a micro-controller
that supports 5Ghz Wi-Fi has been
obtained.
