RESPIRATORY SYSTEM (2)

This document provides an overview of photosynthesis, defining it as the process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy stored in glucose. It details the photosynthesis equation, the structures involved such as chloroplasts and stomata, and the two stages of the process: light-dependent and light-independent reactions. Additionally, it discusses factors affecting the rate of photosynthesis and its importance for life on Earth.

SCIENCE 9

Quarter 1 – Week 6
REVIEW
PHOTOSYNTHE
SIS
OBJECTIVE
By the end of this lesson, students should be able to:
 Define photosynthesis. S
 Understand the importance of photosynthesis for life on
Earth.
 Describe the process and the chemical equation of
photosynthesis.
 Identify the structures involved in photosynthesis in
plant cells.
 Explain the factors that affect the rate of
photosynthesis.
What is
Photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is the process
by which green plants, algae,
and some bacteria convert
light energy, usually from the
sun, into chemical energy
stored in glucose (a type of
sugar).
What is
PlantsPhotosynthesis?
take in:
🌿Carbon dioxide (CO₂) from the air
🌿Water (H₂O) from the soil
🌿Light energy from the sun

And produce:
🌿Glucose (C₆H₁₂O₆) for energy and

growth
🌿Oxygen (O₂) as a waste product
The Photosynthesis Equation

6CO₂ + 6H₂O + light energy → C₆H₁₂O₆ +

6O₂
Carbon dioxide + Water + Light energy → Glucose + Oxygen
Where Does Photosynthesis Happen?

Photosynthesis occurs in chloroplasts,

which are small green structures found
mostly in leaf cells.

Chloroplasts contain a green pigment

called chlorophyll, which:
🌿Captures light energy from the sun
🌿Gives plants their green color
Parts of the Leaf Involved in
Stomata
Photosynthesis
🌿 Tiny openings on the underside of leaves.
🌿 Allow gas exchange (CO₂ in, O₂ out)
Parts of the Leaf Involved in
Photosynthesis
Guard Cells
🌿 Control the opening and closing of the stomata.
Parts of the Leaf Involved in
Photosynthesis
Veins (xylem & phloem)
🌿 Xylem carries water, phloem carries food.
Parts of the Leaf Involved in
Photosynthesis
Chloroplasts
🌿Carry out photosynthesis using
chlorophyll.
TWO STAGES OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS

1. Light-dependent reactions (in the thylakoids of the chloroplast)

🍀 Needs sunlight
🍀 Water is split into oxygen, protons, and electrons
🍀 Oxygen is released

2. Light-independent reactions (Calvin Cycle) (in the stroma)

🍀 Uses carbon dioxide and products from the light-dependent
reactions
🍀 Glucose is produced
Factors Affecting
Photosynthesis

Factor How It Affects Photosynthesis

🍀Light Intensity More light = faster rate (up to a certain point)
🍀Carbon Dioxide More CO₂ = faster rate (until saturated)
🍀Temperature Too low = slow, too high = enzymes stop working
🍀Water Lack of water = stomata close = no CO₂ intake
Why is Photosynthesis
Important?

🌿 Provides oxygen for all aerobic organisms

🌿 Removes carbon dioxide from the atmosphere
🌿 Produces food (glucose) for plants (and indirectly, all living things)
🌿 Forms the base of most food chains
