The Direct Method 1

The Direct Method, established around 1900, focuses on teaching a language through direct communication without translation, emphasizing vocabulary over grammar. It employs techniques such as reading aloud, conversation practice, and self-correction, while offering advantages like improved pronunciation and fluency, but also has drawbacks like neglecting reading and writing skills. A study found that the Direct Method is more effective than the Grammar Translation Method for teaching English at the elementary level in Pakistan.

The Introduction
01
The direct method principles have been applied by
language teachers for many years. It established in
England around 1900, contrast with Grammar
translation method. It was revived as a method when
the goal of instruction became learning how to use
another language to communicate.

The Direct Method has one very basic rule: No

translation is allowed. In fact, the Direct Method
receives its name from the fact that meaning is to be
conveyed directly in the target language through the
use of demonstration and visual aids, with no
recourse to the students’ native language.
The approach aims to create an
environment that replicates real-life
language usage, encouraging learners to
think, communicate, and respond directly in
the target language (Blog,2023).

• By incorporating new words into whole phrases,

students practice their vocabulary.

Awan and Nawaz (2015) compared the implementations of
GTM and Direct Method for teaching English at Elementary
Level in Pakistan. They found that:

• GTM has a valid place in the field, as it emphasizes

learning through grammatical rules and sentence
structure.

• Direct Method, emphasizes fluency and the importance

of speaking the language rather than memorizing it.

The study provides insight into the best teaching method

and it showed that direct method is the best one in
teaching English language to the students at elementary
