Difference Between Algebraic

Equation and Expression

• Class: 6th
• Subject: Mathematics
• Duration: 40 Minutes
Objective
• - Understand and define algebraic expressions
and equations.
• - Identify the key difference between an
expression and an equation.
• - Recognize examples of both in one variable.
Material Needed
• - Whiteboard and markers
• - Worksheets for practice
Introduction (5 minutes)
• - Greet the class and write the word 'Algebra'
on the board.
• - Ask: “Has anyone heard of algebra? What do
you think it means?”
• - Explain: Algebra uses letters to represent
numbers.
Algebraic Expression (One Variable)
• - Definition: A combination of numbers,
variables, and operations (no equal sign).
• - Example: 3x + 2
• - Explanation: Shows a value but no equality.
Algebraic Equation (One Variable)
• - Definition: Includes an equal sign.
• - Example: 3x + 2 = 11
• - Explanation: Can be solved to find the value
of variable.
Comparison Table (5 minutes)
• - Expression: No equal sign, cannot be solved.
• - Equation: Has equal sign, can be solved.
• - Example:
• Expression: 4x + 5
• Equation: 4x + 5 = 13
Activity (10 minutes)
• - Distribute flashcards with algebraic phrases.
• - Students sort them into 'expressions' and
'equations'.
• - Volunteers explain their sorting choices.
Practice Questions (5 minutes)
• Identify as Expression or Equation:
• 1. 5x – 7
• 2. 2y + 3 = 9
• 3. x + 8
• 4. x – 4 = 6
Assessment (4 minutes)
• - Quick oral quiz:
• - Call out 5 algebraic forms.
• - Students respond with “Expression” or
“Equation”.
Conclusion (1 minute)
• - Summary:
• Expression: Shows value.
• Equation: Shows equality and can be solved.
• - Encourage questions.
Homework
• - Do Question # 1,2,3 from Exercise 7.1
