Lecture_6_Mechanical Analysis of Soil (Sieve Analysis)

The document is a lecture on the mechanical analysis of soil, focusing on properties such as grain size distribution and the methods of sieve and sedimentation analysis. It explains the significance of effective size, uniformity coefficient, and coefficient of gradation in determining soil characteristics. Additionally, it outlines classifications for well-graded and poorly graded gravel and sand based on these coefficients.

MECHANICAL ANALYSIS OF SOIL

• Sieve analysis for gravel and sand (coarse-grained fraction)

• Sedimentation analysis or wet analysis for silt and clay (fine-
grained fraction).

• Sieve analysis > 75μ

• Sedimentation analysis or wet analysis < 75μ

Sieve Analysis

The particle size distribution curve is obtained by plotting percent finer N as ordinate
on natural scale against particle size D mm as abscissa on logarithmic scale.

Application of Grain Size Distribution Chart

1. Effective size (D10): It is the diameter in the particle-size

distribution curve corresponding to 10% finer. The effective size of a
granular soil is used to estimate the hydraulic conductivity and
drainage through soil.
D60
2. Uniformity coefficient (Cu): It is defined as Cu 
D10
where D60 = diameter corresponding to 60 % finer.

3. Coefficient of gradation/curvature (Cc): It is defined as

D302
Cc 
D60 D10

Application of Grain Size Distribution Chart

• For well graded gravel, Cu ≥ 4 and 1 ≤ Cc ≤ 3

• For well graded sand, Cu ≥ 6 and 1 ≤ Cc ≤ 3

• If Cu lies between 1 and 2, it is called uniformly graded sand.

• For poorly graded gravel, Cu < 4; Cc < 1 or Cc > 3

• For poorly graded sand, Cu < 6; Cc < 1 or Cc > 3
