Overview

Introduction
Definition: The Pitot-Static System is a network of
pressure-sensitive instruments that measure dynamic and
static pressure to provide critical flight data.
Instruments Relying on the System
• Airspeed Indicator
• Altimeter
• Vertical Speed Indicator
• Machmetre (Only in large aircrafts)

Dynamic and Static Pressure
Dynamic Pressure: Pressure created by aircraft motion
through the air.
• = dynamic pressure
• = fluid mass density
• = flow speed
Static Pressure: Pressure exerted by the atmosphere at
a given altitude.
• Total pressure = Static pressure + Dynamic pressure
6
Pitot Tube
Mounted on exterior
Faces directly into airflow
Measures total pressure
7
Static Port
Also located on exterior
Positioned to measure Static Pressure perpendicular to
the airflow
Measurement not affected by aircraft motion
8
Airspeed Indicator (ASI)
Connected to both pitot tube and static port
Measures difference between total pressure and static
pressure
9
Altimeter
Uses only static port
Measures atmpospheric pressure
10
Vertical Speed Indicator (VSI)
It is only connected to the static port
Measures the rate of change of Static presure
Determines wether climbing or descending
11
Common errors
Pitot tube blockage
• If drain hole also blocked: ASI begins to behave like
altimetre
• If drain hole unblocked: ASI read zero
Static port blockage
• Altimetre freezes
• VSI indicates zero
• ASI response explained on next page
12
Common errors
Static port blockage
• ASI will behave as follows:
1. At same level where static port was blocked will read
correct
2. If climb made to higher level ASI will under read
3. If descent is made it will overread
