Teacher as a Person in Society

Presented by: Anchie R. Bauyon

Value Formation
Values - are individual beliefs that motivate people
to act one way or another. They serve as a guide for
human behavior.

Values Formation - refers to the process of

instilling and developing values in individuals.
The core of teaching consists of four basic
values:
Dignity - Treating every student with respect and
recognizing their value as individuals.

Truthfulness - Being honest, providing accurate

information, and building trust.

Fairness - Ensuring all students have equal opportunities

to succeed and are treated equally.

Responsibility and Freedom - Encouraging both teachers

and students to take responsibility for their actions, while
also allowing students the freedom to think, explore, and
express themselves.
Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor Dimensions

Cognitive Dimension - Mental understanding. We must

understand the value we want to acquire and know how to
live by that value.

Affective Dimension - Experience and connection toward

something. “It is not enough to know what honesty is or
why one should be honest. One has to feel something
towards honesty, be moved towards honesty as preferable
to dishonesty.” (Aquino, 1990).

Psychomotor Dimension - Living by the value. It includes

how we act and behave in accordance with our values.
Training the Intellect and Will

Intellect - is our capacity for understanding and thought.

You think to know and understand.

Will - capacity to choose among alternative courses of

action and to act on the choice made.

Value formation is a training of the Intellect and will. Your

intellect perceives a value and presents it to the will as a
right or wrong value.
“The intellect proposes and the will disposes.”
- St. Thomas Aquinas

It is, therefore, necessary to develop your intellect in its

three functions, namely “Formation of ideas, judgment,
and reasoning.”
“Training of the will must be essentially self-
training.”
“To have a strong will means to have control of the
will, to be able to direct it despite all contrary

Values Hierarchy

Based on Scheler’s hierarchy of values, the highest

values directly pertain to the Supreme being while the
lowest values are those that pertain to the sensual
pleasures.

According to Scheler, we act and live well if we stick to

his hierarchy of values such as giving greater preference
to the higher values. While distorting the hierarchy of
values leads to misery.
