Expert Systems

Expert systems are intelligent computer programs designed to solve complex problems requiring significant human expertise, utilizing a knowledge base and inference engine. They assist or replace human decision-making in various fields, such as medicine and engineering, offering advantages like increased availability and reliability, while facing limitations like narrow problem scope and high development costs. Overall, expert systems serve as specialized consultants, providing human-like inferences based on their knowledge base.

Expert Systems
An intelligent computer program that uses
knowledge and interference procedures to solve
problems that are difficult enough to require
significant human expertise for their solution.
(Feigenbaum 1982)

ES are computer-based information systems that

use expert knowledge to attain high level decision
performance in a narrow problem domain.
Basic Concept of Expert
System
● User supplies facts or other information to expert
system and receives expert advice or expertise in
response

Internally, the expert system consists of two main

components
 Knowledge base
 Inference engine

Expert systems: programming

computers to make decisions
in real life situations (for ex.
Some expert systems help
doctors diagnose diseases
based on symptoms)
Components of an Expert
System
 Knowledge base : collection of facts and rules
which describe all the knowledge about the
problem domain.

 Inference Engine : the part of the system that

chooses which facts and rules to apply when
trying to solve the user’s query.

 User interface : the part of the system which

takes in the user’s query in a readable form and
passes it to the inference engine. It then displays
the results to the user
Applications of Expert Systems
EXAMPLES OF EXPERT
SYSTEM
DENDRAL Stanford analyse mass spectrometry
MacSyma MIT symbolic mathematics
MYCIN Stanford Diagnosis of blood diseases

Digitalis MIT Digital therapy

PUFF Stanford pulmonary diseases

XCON DEC Computer

ACES Aerospace satellite diagnosis

Deita GE Diagnosis of diesel locomotives
Max NYNEX Telephone network troubleshooting
Advantages of Expert
Systems

● Increased availability
● Fast response
● Reduced cost
● Steady, unemotional
● Reduced danger
and complete
● Performance
responses at all times
● Multiple expertise
● Intelligent tutor
● Increased reliability
● Intelligent database
● Explanation
Limitations of Expert
Systems
Limited to relatively narrow problems
Cannot readily deal with “mixed” knowledge
Possibility of error
Cannot refine own knowledge base
Difficult to maintain
May have high development costs
Raise legal and ethical concerns
Conclusion
● An expert system is a knowledge-based information
system; that is, it uses its knowledge about a specific area
to act as an expert consultant to users.
● The components of an expert system are a knowledge base
and software modules that perform inferences on the
knowledge and offer answers to a user’s questions.
● Expert systems provide answers to questions in a very
specific problem area by making human like inferences
about knowledge contained in a specialized knowledge
base.
