Transitive and Intransitive Verbs

Understanding Action Verbs in

Sentences
Introduction to Verbs
• Verbs are action words that express an action
or a state of being.
• There are two main types of action verbs:
• 1. Transitive Verbs
• 2. Intransitive Verbs
What is a Transitive Verb?
• A transitive verb is a verb that requires a direct
object to complete its meaning.
• Example: She **bought** a book.
• (‘book’ is the direct object of ‘bought’)
What is an Intransitive Verb?
• An intransitive verb does not require a direct
object to complete its meaning.
• Example: She **sleeps** peacefully.
• (There is no direct object, only an adverb
‘peacefully’)
Differences Between Transitive &
Intransitive Verbs
• - **Transitive Verbs**: Need a direct object
(e.g., She reads a book.)
• - **Intransitive Verbs**: Do not take a direct
object (e.g., He sleeps soundly.)
How to Identify Them?
• 1. Find the verb in the sentence.
• 2. Ask 'what' or 'whom' after the verb:
• - If an object answers the question →
**Transitive Verb**
• - If no object exists → **Intransitive Verb**
Practice Exercises
• 1. Identify whether the verbs in these
sentences are transitive or intransitive:
• - She wrote a letter.
• - The baby cried loudly.
• - They built a house.
• - He runs every morning.
Conclusion
• Understanding transitive and intransitive verbs
helps improve sentence structure and clarity
in writing.
