Computer Networks
LECTURE 1
2
Network

 Collection of computers or nodes that communicate with each other on

a shared network medium.
 When two or more devices are connected together and share resources
is called network (wired or wireless).
3
Data communication

 Transmission of data between two points.

 Exchange of data between devices via some form of transmission
media.

 Such as : cable, wire, air or vacuum.

4
Components of data communication

1. Sender/Host : device that sends the data message.

2. Receiver/Destination : device that receives the data message.

3. Message : message is the information to be communicated.

4. Transmission medium : is a physical path by which a message
travels from sender to receiver.

5. Protocol : set of rules.

it represents an agreement between the communication devices.
without protocol, two devices may be connected but not
communicating.

6
Types of computer network

 Geographical (Physical) Networks :

1. BAN
2. PAN
3. LAN
4. MAN
5. WAN

 Virtual (Logical) Networks :

1. VLANs
2. VPN
7
Types of computer network

 Body area network (BAN) : is the connection of computing devices

worn on or affixed to a person’s body.
 Example : wristbands, smartwatches, headset…

 Personal area network (PAN) : is the connection of personal

computer devices to communicate over a short distance (within the
range of 10 meters).
 Example : Bluetooth, wireless keyboard and mouse…
8
Types of computer network

 Local area network (LAN) : is a collection of devices connected

together in a limited physical area such as school, office, building ….

 Metropolitan area network (MAN) : MAN are formed by connecting

multiple LANs. MAN is usually spans a city or in a large metropolitan
area.

 Wide area network (WAN) : WAN are formed by connecting multiple

MANs. WAN provides long distance transmission of data over a large
geographical area that may comprise a country, a continent, or even the
whole world.

10
VLANs

 Virtualized connection that connects multiple devices and networks nodes

from different LANs into one logical network.
11
VPN

 Stands for virtual private network.

 Establishes a digital connection between your computer and a remote
server owned by a VPN provider.
 Creating a point-to-point tunnel that encrypts your personal data,
masks your IP address, and lets you sidestep website blocks and
firewalls on the internet.
12
VPN
13
Physical structure of network

 1.. Point to point : connection between two devices through a link.

 2.. Multipoint : connection that connects more than two devices and
share a link.
14

15
Internet and WWW

 Internet : internet is the largest or global network of the world in

which systems are connected with each other all over the world.
 Peoples can share information and communicate anywhere with an
internet.

 WWW (world wide web) : www is collection of documents, web

pages or websites that users can access on their systems through the
internet.
16
E-mail

 E-mail (Electronic mail) : E-mail is the exchange of computer stored

messages by telecommunication.
 E-mail is a computer based application for the exchange of messages
between users.
