Managing Change: The Approach of the

Prophet (pbuh)

Allah (SWT) is changing the universe
continuously
Allah (SWT) says “And the heaven We
constructed with strength, and indeed, We are
[its] expander.” Adh-Dhariyat: 47.

It suggests that the universe is changing


continuously.
Missions of all the Prophets (AS)

The missions of all the Prophets (AS) was


to bring change in the false beliefs and
practices of the people to whom they were
sent. The Prophet ‫ ))ﷺ‬of Islam was
assigned the same task.
What is change management?

The Association of Project Management (APM)


defines it as “Change management is a structured
approach to moving an organisation from the
current state to the desired future state.”
Change means to alter
the CURRENT STATE
into a DESIRED STATE
What was CURRENT STATE?
• People were worshipping many gods
• Fighting for trivial issues
• There was no organised government
• Poor & women were oppressed
• Economic system was unjust
• People were divided in tribes
What was DESIRED STATE?

• Dominance of Islam in the area and beyond.

• Worship of only one god, mutual respect, end of tribal wars,


respect for poor, women, and weak people.

• Establishment of peace.
What was DESIRED STATE?...
• Elimination of social sins like theft, and adultery.

• Replacement of interest-based economic system which


was making rich richer and poor poorer.

• Equal distribution of wealth.

• Introduction of ethics on the battlefield.


The FOCUS of change
• Management experts believe changes are
required through a “systematic approach to
transforming processes … and values.

• It entails a set of activities that help the members


to switch from their present way of working to the
intended one.”
What is a process?

A process is “A series of actions or steps taken

in order to achieve a particular end.”


What is an activity?

It is “a thing that a person or group does or

has done.” Thing means an action.


The Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬had changed

• Social processes

• Economic processes

• Managerial processes

• Political processes
What is a value?
• Value is defined as “A principle or standard,
as of behaviour, that is considered
important or desirable”

• It is “one's judgment of what is important in


life.”
The Prophet (‫)ﷺ‬Changed
the values of battlefield
• Do not be dishonest and fulfil your promises,
• Do not mutilate dead bodies,
• Do not disturb worshippers and indifferent
people,
• Do not cut trees,
• Do not demolish buildings ete.
The above changes were a
sample, the Prophet
(‫)ﷺ‬had changed every

of life.
