USES AND EXAMPLES
1. Can (Ability, Possibility, Permission, Request) Ability: I can swim across the river. Possibility: This can be dangerous. Permission: You can leave early today. Request: Can you help me with this?
2. Could (Past Ability, Polite Request, Possibility, Permission)
Past Ability: When I was young, I could run fast. Polite Request: Could you please pass the salt? Possibility: It could rain tomorrow. Permission (Past): When I was a student, I could stay out late. 3. May (Permission, Possibility, Wish) Permission: May I leave early? Possibility: It may rain today. Wish: May you have a great year ahead! 4. Might (Possibility, Less Certain Permission) Possibility: He might come to the party. Permission (Formal, Uncertain): You might leave if the teacher allows.
5. Must (Strong Obligation, Necessity, Deduction)
Obligation: You must wear a seatbelt. Necessity: We must finish this today. Deduction: He left early, so he must be home by now. 6. Shall (Future Intention, Formal Obligation, Offer/Suggestion) Future Intention: I shall return soon. Formal Obligation: You shall follow the rules. Offer/Suggestion: Shall we go for a walk?
7. Should (Advice, Obligation, Expectation, Probability)
Advice: You should eat more vegetables. Obligation: We should respect our elders. Expectation: The train should arrive soon. Probability: She should be home by now. 8. Will (Future, Promise, Determination, Instant Decision) Future: I will call you tomorrow. Promise: I will always love you. Determination: He will succeed no matter what. Instant Decision: I will help you with that. 9. Would (Politeness, Hypothetical Situations, Past Habit, Preference) Politeness: Would you like some coffee? Hypothetical Situations: If I were rich, I would travel the world. Past Habit: When we were kids, we would play outside all day. Preference: I would rather stay home than go out. 10. Ought to (Moral Obligation, Advice, Probability) Moral Obligation: You ought to respect your parents. Advice: You ought to apologize to her. Probability: The movie ought to be interesting.
11. Need (Necessity, Obligation – Negative & Interrogative)
Necessity: You need to submit the form. Obligation (Negative): You need not worry. Interrogative: Need I do it now?
Bravery: He dare not speak against the boss. Challenge: Dare you jump into the river?
