Separation problem

The document outlines a separation problem involving three different feed mixtures: benzene and water, naphthalene, toluene, and water, and p-xylene with water. It describes the conditions and processes for separating these mixtures using various types of separators, including flash separators and decanters. Additionally, it specifies the need to create a flowsheet in ASPEN PLUS for the decanter operation.

Separation problem

1- For a feed of benzene and water with given properties enters

a separator, that separates it into benzene , water mixed output.
Feed contains 60% mol benzene and 40% mol water at
120˚c ,pressure 1 atm, feed rate 100 kmol/hr. (RK-ASPEN)

2- A feed consisting of naphthalene, toluene and water with a

mole fraction of 0.18, 0.26 and 0.56 respectively at 25˚c and 1.5
atm enters a mixes with air. The resulting mixture is separated
by a flash separator, that separates it into vapour, oil, and a
liquid and operates at 50˚c,1.2 bar. Find the composition of the
outlet streams of liquid, oil, vapour.(Air flow rate- 500kg/hr and
feed flow rate- 1000 kg/hr). (NRTL)

3- Create a flowsheet in ASPEN PLUS of decanter. Feed to

decanter has 50% wt p- xylene , 50% wt water and flow rate at
2000 kg/hr. feed is at 30˚c and 1 atm. Decanter is at 40˚c and 1
atm. (NRTL)
Types of separators
1-Flash2: Separates feed into two streams (vapor and liquid).

2-Flash3: Separates feed into three streams (vapor and two liquid
phases).

3-Decanter: Used for liquid-liquid separation, often to separate water

from a liquid mixture.

4-Sep: General-purpose separator that can split feed into multiple outlet
streams.

5-Sep2: Separates feed into two outlet streams.
