When did it start?

• Day of the dead is believed to have been started by the Aztecs and other
indigenous groups of Mexican people
• It is believed by historians to be a celebration to honor the Aztec gods of life and
death
• These gods were depicted as skeletons or they wore bones and clothing
• People would offer things such as jewelry, money, or food to these gods in hopes
of granting the deceased a safe passage to the afterlife

What do I think?
• I think its similar to an anniversary of someone passing. Most of the differences
come from instead of grieving over their memory or mourning their death, day of
the dead focuses on celebrating their life and legacy, as well as offering gifts as
remembrance of the deceased.
• I think that it's important to remember ones who have passed and celebrating
their life is a good way to do so.

What do others think?

• Many people who don’t celebrate the Mexican holiday respect the traditions of
those who do
• There are groups of people who believe it wrong for groups other than Mexican
natives to celebrate the holiday
• This specific holiday is considered a celebration of someone's life and not
someone's culture although its roots run deep in Mexican and Aztec history
