LESSON 11- APPLICATIONS OF ELECTROMAGNETS

The document outlines the objectives of a lesson on electromagnets, including a review of their applications such as cranes, doorbells, relays, transformers, and Maglev trains. It explains the function and structure of relay circuits, emphasizing their role in protecting electrical systems and enabling control of high-power circuits with low-power signals. Additionally, it includes links to videos for further understanding and questions for self-assessment.

RELAY CIRCUITS
 The primary purpose of a relay is to protect the electrical system
from too high of a voltage or current, allowing the safe operation of
any equipment it connects to.
 Relays are used to make things safer. For example, the starter motor
in a car uses a high current and needs thick wires for the current to
flow through. A relay is used in a car so that the driver does not
have to touch any part of the circuit that has a high current.

Description of the Relay Circuit
 Inside a relay, you will find a coil, a set of input terminals, and
operating contact terminals.
 The coil is energized by a control signal, creating a magnetic
field.
 This magnetic field moves an armature, which opens or closes
the contacts.
 The contacts then either complete or break the circuit, allowing
or stopping the flow of electricity.
Description of the Relay Circuit

Relays also include a spring to return the armature

to its original position when the coil is de-
energized. This simple mechanism enables precise
control of high-power circuits using low-power
signals.
Armature: In a relay circuit, the armature is the
movable, ferromagnetic part that responds to the
magnetic field generated by the electromagnet,
moving to open or close the contacts and thus

1. How can you make an electromagnet?

2. What can you use to show the magnetic field around an electromagnet?

3. What are three ways to make an electromagnet stronger?

4. Give one useful difference between electromagnets and permanent

magnets?

5. Why is an electromagnet stronger if it has an iron core?

 CHECK YOUR UNDERSTANDING

6. What other materials would be good for making the core so that the

electromagnet is strong?
