THEORY OF ARCHITECTURE
AR. CRISTINA D. SEÑAL
WHO IS RENZO
PIANO
One of the most renowned architects of the contemporary era, Renzo Piano was born in Genoa in 1937 into a family
of builders. He obtained his secondary school diploma in classical studies and then earned a degree in Architecture
from Milan Polytechnic in
1964.
Following his university studies, he gained experience in Philadelphia and London, and the London experience in
particular became a determining factor in his professional development, as Jean Prouvé assigned him the role of
president of the project commission
for the Centre Georges Pompidou.

This was the beginning of what would become a multifaceted international career that has lasted for over half a
century, and for which Piano is considered one of the most successful starchitects, "the representative of Italianness

The Shard, also referred to as the Shard London Bridge
and formerly London Bridge Tower, is a pyramid-

Shard Quarter development.

The Centr

The Centre Pompidou, more fully the Centre
national d'art et de culture Georges-Pompidou,
also known as the Pompidou Centre in English,
is a complex building in the Beaubourg area of
the 4th arrondissement of Paris, near Les
Halles, rue Montorgueil, and the Marais.
RENZO PIANO
PHILOSOPHY
At the core of Renzo Piano's
design philosophy lies the belief
in architecture as a social and
environmental endeavor. He
emphasizes the importance of
creating buildings that not only
serve their intended purpose
but also contribute positively to
their surroundings and the well- Tjibaou New York Whitney Museum
being of their users.

Frank Gehry
• Frank Owen Gehry, born February 28, 1929 is a Canadian-
born American architect and designer. A number of his
buildings, including his private residence in Santa Monica,
California, have become world-renowned attractions.
• His works are considered among the most important of
contemporary architecture in the 2010 World Architecture
Survey, leading Vanity Fair to call him “the most important
architect of our age”. He is also the designer of the National
Dwight D. Eisenhower Memorial.
• Gehry's design philosophy expresses emotions and feelings
in order to create a space where people want to be. In
contrast to the ideals of Modernist architecture, Gehry
believes that buildings cannot be characterless, white boxes.
• Frank Gehry condemns the norm of designing buildings in
linear geometric forms. He believes that a building should
blend with its surroundings and appear as its natural element
but still stand out from the rest. He depicts these ideas by
designing fluid forms, using metallic surface finishes, and
bold colours.
• His design philosophy has also become popular under the
overarching design movement known as “deconstructivism”.

WHO IS
DENYS?
Sir Denys Louis Lasdun (September 8th 1914 - January 11th
2001) was a British architect. He studied at the Archiectural
Association in London.

FAMILY
BACKGROUND

Art was endemic in the Lasdun family. His father, an engineer

and businessman who died when Denys was only fi ve, was a
cousin of the artist Leon Bakst, who worked with the Ballets
Russes. His mother was a pianist, so his childhood was spent
among music and musicians.

EXPLAINED
"The strata of the building are like new levels of ground and
they will become real places. The National Theatre must
become a part of the city. Any idea of a cultural ghetto has
gone," said the architect.

The National Theatre's foyers are spacious and open, featuring

the distinctive concrete aesthetic of Brutalist architecture.
Visitors can enjoy panoramic views of the River Thames and
the cityscape from various points within the building.

PLAN
Brutalist movement's emphasis on bold, sculptural forms and the
use of raw concrete. While the architectural style may be divisive,
the National Theatre stands as an iconic structure and a hub for
the performing arts in London.

The fl oor plan of the National Theatre in London, designed by Sir Denys Lasdun, is a
complex arrangement of spaces that accommodates the various functions required for a
modern theatre.

Denys Lasdun's design for the National Theatre emphasizes functionality while incorporating the bold
and sculptural aesthetic of Brutalist architecture. The floor plan is organized to efficiently support the
diverse activities associated with theatrical productions, from rehearsals and workshops to
performances in the various auditoriums.

The exterior of the National Theatre includes terraces and walkways that allow patrons to enjoy the
scenic views of the river and surrounding areas.

Denys Lasdun's approach to the exterior design of the National Theatre reflects both functional
considerations and a commitment to creating a landmark that engages with its surroundings. The
result is a building that stands out on the South Bank while offering a unique and dynamic experience
for visitors.
