ANALYSIS OF

BASKETBALL
AND ITS HISTORY.

What IS basketball?
• It is a team sport involving 12 players on each
team’s roster with only 5 players going on the
court while 7 players act as substitutes.
• It is played by maneuvering a ball across the court
either through passing or dribbling and shooting it
into a hoop on the side opposite yours.
• Points are earned from shooting the ball into the
opposing team’s hoop and the team with the
highest score wins.
When & why was basketball invented?
Basketball, surprisingly enough, was invented in 1891
by a Canadian phys-ed instructor James Naismith and
it was invented due to concerns that American
football was too rough and was prone to injuries.
Basketball in the past varied greatly to the basketball
we know now. It began with only 13 rules, dubbed the
original 13 rules, with some rules remaining in the
current ruleset but Naismith continued modifying the
ruleset until it resembled the current ruleset we have
today.

Play styles
As stated before, there are multiple positions that a
player can play. The following are these positions
and their purpose.
1. Center
• These players are often the tallest in the team. Their purpose is to
score on close shots and rebounds and block opponent’s shots.

2. Power Forward
• These players are seen playing closer to the basket to execute
rebounds and defend taller players. They can also make longer
shots than the center.
Play styles
3. Small Forward
• This position covers as much space in the court as possible and plays
against small and large players. Players of this position must be able
to shoot long distance and short distance shots.

4. Point Guard
• Players of this position are often the best at dribbling and passing.
They defend the opponent’s point guard and try to steal the ball.

5. Shooting Guard
• This position mostly shoots long distance shots and can also dribble
the ball well.
Play styles
In basketball, there are 2 types of passes; Air
passes and Bounce passes.
Air Passes require the ball to travel through the
air before the other player receives it while
Bounce Passes require the ball to be thrown in
the ground to bounce it towards the receiver.
There are multiple variations for each pass and
the following are:
1. Chest Pass
2. Overhead Pass
3. Wrap Around Pass
