Tells the computer what to do
A set of instructions that drive a computer to perform specific tasks is called
a program.
When a computer uses a particular program, it is said to be executing or
running the program.
Software are the reason people purchase computers
There are Two types of software
System software
Application software

SYSTEM SOFTWARE
1. System software
– Any Program that controls the computer’s hardware or that can be used to
maintain the computer in some way so that it runs more efficiently.
– It has three types
i. Operating system : Tells the computer, how to use its own components.
• Windows XP
ii. Network operating system (OS) : Allows computers to communicate and
share data across a network.
• Windows Server 2003
iii. Utility : Makes computer system easier to use.
• Symantec AntiVirus

2. Application software
– Application Software tells the computer how to accomplish specific tasks, such
as word processing or drawing.
– Accomplishes a specific task
– Most common type of software
• MS Word
• DBMS
• Graphics Program
– Covers most common uses of computers

• Fact with no meaning on its own
• Stored using the binary number system
• Data can be organized into files
• A File is simple a set of data that has been given a name.

• Role depends on ability
– Setup the system
– Install software
– Manage files
– Maintain the system
• “User-less” computers
– Run with no user input except for System configuration or maintenance.
– Automated systems
– Navigation Systems
– Weather Stations
