Hadith/Sunnah as second source

of law
• The Sunnah refers to the life, actions, sayings, approvals, and silent permissions
of the Prophet Muhammad ‫ﷺ‬. It serves as a practical example of how to live
according to the teachings of the Qur’an.

• - It includes:

• What he said (Qawliyyah – verbal)

• What he did (Filiyyah – actions)

• What he approved (Taqririyyah – silent approvals)

• The Sunnah is preserved through Hadith recorded and authenticated sayings and
actions of the Prophet.
Significances of hadith/sunnah
as a source of law
• 1. Explains and Interprets the Qur’an
• The Qur’an often gives general guidelines, and it is the Hadith
that explains them in detail.
• Example: The Qur’an commands Muslims to pray (Surah Al-
Baqarah 2:43), but Hadith shows how to pray (number of
units, positions, timings).
• "Pray as you have seen me praying."_ Sahih Bukhari, Hadith
2. Provides Additional Legislation
• Some rulings are not found in the Qur’an but are legislated in
the Hadith.
• Example: The punishment for a married adulterer (stoning) is
found in Hadith, not in the Qur’an.
• "The Prophet stoned a man and a woman who had
committed adultery."_ Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1691
3. Clarifies the Meaning of Qur’anic Verses
• Hadith helps clarify ambiguous or broad statements in
the Qur’an.
• Example: The Qur’an allows transactions but forbids
interest (riba). Hadith clarifies what is riba and how to
avoid it.
• "Gold for gold, silver for silver... whoever gives more
or takes more has dealt in riba."_ Sahih Muslim,
Hadith 1584
4. Serves as a Practical Application of Islam
• The life of the Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬is a living example of the
Qur’an in action.
• A’isha (RA) said: “The character of the Prophet was
the Qur’an.”_ Sahih Muslim
• Example: His actions show how to conduct trade,
treat neighbors, and perform rituals.
5. Source of Moral and Ethical Teachings
• Hadith contains the Prophet’s teachings on good
character, patience, honesty, etc.
• "The most beloved of people to Allah is the one who
is most beneficial to others.“ Al-Mu'jam Al-Awsat
6. Forms the Basis for Islamic Jurisprudence (Fiqh)

• Islamic scholars use Hadith alongside the Qur’an to

develop legal rulings.
• Example: Marriage, divorce, inheritance, criminal law
all have rulings rooted in Hadith.
7. Provides Detailed Ritual Practices

• Hadith provides exact methods for acts of worship

(ʿibādāt), which the Qur’an only commands broadly.
• Example: How to perform ablution (wudhu), how to
fast, how to pay zakat, and how to perform Hajj.
8. Preserves the Words and Deeds of the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬

• Through Hadith, we preserve authentic guidance

directly from the Messenger of Allah ‫ﷺ‬.
• "Whoever obeys the Messenger has obeyed
Allah." Qur’an 4:80
9. Serves as a Standard of Judgment
• When there is no clear ruling in the Qur’an, Hadith serves as
the basis for legal and moral judgment.
• The Prophet ‫ ﷺ‬said to Mu’adh ibn Jabal:

• “If you find nothing in the Qur’an, then in my Sunnah. ”Abu

Dawud, Hadith 3592
10. Helps Preserve Islamic Identity and Tradition

• Hadith plays a key role in transmitting Islamic practices,

values, and teachings from generation to generation.
11. Fulfills the Qur’anic Command to Follow the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬

• The Qur’an commands Muslims to obey and follow the Prophet ‫ﷺ‬, which is only possible by
adhering to Hadith.

• "Say: If you love Allah, follow me..."_ Qur’an 3:31

12. Protects Against Misinterpretation

• Without Hadith, people could interpret Qur’anic verses incorrectly or out of context. Hadith
ensures correct understanding
Conclusion
The Hadith/Sunnah is not optional but essential for fully understanding and applying Islamic
teachings. It is the second primary source of Islamic law after the Qur’an, and both must be
followed hand-in-hand.
