Personal Protective Equipment
(PPE)- refers to the safety gear and
clothing wear by welders to protect
themselves from various hazards present
during welding operation.
Flashburn/ Arc eye- an inflammation
of the cornea cause by ultraviolet light
of the welding arc.
Hot work permit – a signed document
before commencing any process that could
ignite flammable materials including

Hazards
Involves hazards
that can cause
burns, eye
damage, cuts,
and crushed toes
and fingers when
welding.
Electric Shock
Electrocution is
the most
immediate and
serious risk for a
welder. The

Exposure to Fumes
and Gases
Overexposure to
welding fumes and
gases can cause
severe health
problems like
respiratory illnesses,
cancer, and impaired
Welding helmet- is a piece of
personal protective equipment
(PPE) specifically designed to
protect welders’ eyes and face from
the intense heat, light, and sparks
emitted during welding processes.
It typically features a lens or
viewing area that can be either
fixed-darkness or auto-darkening,
allowing welders to see clearly
while welding and then darken
automatically to protect their eyes
Helmet shell – must be opaque to light and
resistant to impact, heat and electricity.
Outer cover plate- made of polycarbonate
plastic which protects from radiation, impact
and scratches.
Filter lens- made of glass containing a filler
which reduces the amount of light passing
through to the eyes. Filters are available in
different shade numbers ranging from 2 to 14.
The higher the number, the darker the filter and
the less light passes through the lens.
Clear retainer lens- made of plastic
prevents any broken pieces of the filter
lens from reaching the eye.
Gasket-made of heat insulating material
between the cover lens and the filter lens
protects the lens from sudden heat
changes which could cause it to break.
Lid” or flip-up shield- typically found on
models with auto-darkening filters. When the
lid is in the down position, the dark filter is in
place, protecting the eyes from the intense
light and radiation of the arc.
Retainer Spring:
This is a spring that, in conjunction with
other parts, helps hold a piece in place.
The spring’s tension helps keep the lens
firmly in place while it’s being used.

safety
Respirator- a welding
respirator is a piece of
personal protective
equipment (PPE) designed
to protect welders from
inhaling harmful fumes and
particles generated during
the welding process. It
filters the air a welder
breathes, preventing
Ear protection- refers to
personal protective
equipment (PPE) that
shields the ears from loud
noises and potentially
harmful debris. Welding
environments can generate
high noise levels and
sparks or splatters that
could damage the ear
Welding footwear- often
referred to as welding boots,
are specifically designed to
protect welders from the
hazards associated with
welding, such as heat, sparks,
and molten metal. These boots
are typically made from heat-
resistant materials, have
features like steel toe
protection, and are often
Welding jackets-
protect workers from
sparks, spatter, slag,
and flame. Provides
broader coverage,
extending from the
neck and shoulders
down to the waist,
protecting the arms
and torso.
Welding apron- is a piece of
personal protective equipment
(PPE) specifically designed to
protect welders from the
hazards of welding, such as hot
sparks, molten metal, and
radiation. It covers the front of
the body, typically from the
chest down to the knee or
lower, and is often made of
durable materials like leather,
Welding gloves-are
specialized personal protective
equipment (PPE) designed to
safeguard a welder’s hands
from the numerous hazards
associated with welding, such
as heat, sparks, electrical
shock, and ultraviolet and
infrared radiation. These gloves
provide mechanical protection,
thermal insulation, and
Welding
glasses- is a
specialized type
of glass that is
designed to
protect the
welder’s eyes
from the intense
light and heat
generated
