that you can’t use a person’s life and
liberty as a means to extort money or any
material things or political advantage from
others, no matter how noble the cause.

rights and dignity.

A person who steals is demanded to return
or pay the value of what he has stolen. This
is called restitution.
• As the seventh commandment forbids
theft of every kind, it also despises greed
because it is also a type of theft.
• To covet means to excessively desire for
something that belongs to another.
• The Church protects three values relative
to the Seventh Commandment. These will
help us to solve poverty that causes the
suffering and misery of so many of our
fellow brothers and sisters here in our
country and abroad.
1. Universal Destination and the Private
Ownership of Goods
- people can meet their human needs and of
those who depend on them
- not an absolute and unconditional right
• Violations against the right to property are
two kinds: from above and theft from
below.
 Theft from above – is a kind of theft which is
primarily motivated by the greed of the rich
who take advantage of the poverty and
helplessness of the poor.
 Theft from below – is a kind of theft committed by
the poor who take the goods of others in
violation of the principle of justice and fairness.
2. Social Justice – Pope John Paul II strongly
declares that the violation of the fundamental
dignity of the person can never be justified. No
social organization could claim to serve the
common good if basic human rights are
violated.
3. Preferential Love for the Poor – love for
the poor is the opposite of a life lived in
extravagance while a great number of people
are very poor.
A. Scripture
• Get your bible, read and reflect on the
message of Psalm 63. Compose a prayer
expressing your ardent longing for God.
B. Church Teaching
• Church teaching illuminates the primary
meaning of the Seventh Commandment
and Tenth Commandment as dealing with
the disordered desires of the human heart,
the covetousness of the heart.
