No. 11 Sampling

The document discusses the concept of sampling in research, including its history, types, and methods for determining sample size, such as Slovin's formula. It outlines various sampling techniques, including probability sampling methods like simple random, systematic, stratified, and cluster sampling. Additionally, it presents scenarios for practical application of these sampling methods in different contexts.

THE BOAT IS SINKING

You find yourself on a small boat in the

middle of the ocean. Suddenly, you notice
water gushing into the boat from a hole in
the hull. The boat is sinking fast. The
learners will group themselves.
PICTOWORD
SAMPLING
Sampling
is a word that refers to the
method or process of selecting
respondents or people to answer
questions meant to yield data for
research study.
Sampling
• Cost-effectiveness
• Time efficiency
• Reduced data collection efforts
HISTORY

The beginning of sampling could be

traced back to the early political
activities of the Americans in 1920
when Literary Digest did a
pioneering survey about the
American citizen's favorite among the
presidential candidates.
This was the very first survey
that served as the impetus for the
discovery by the academic
researchers of other sampling
strategies that they categorized
into two classes: probability
sampling or unbiased sampling
and non-probability sampling
Slovin’s Formula
Slovin's formula, also known as Slovin's
formula for sample size determination, is a
method used to estimate the appropriate
sample size for a population when you want to
conduct a survey or research study.

Sampling Error
crops up if the selection does not take place in the
way it is planned.
# sampling error depends on the size of the sample
# the smaller the sample is, the bigger the number of
sampling errors
# choose to have bigger sample of respondents to
avoid sampling errors
Types of Probability Sampling
• Simple Random Sampling
• Systematic Sampling
• Stratified Sampling
• Cluster Sampling
Types of Probability Sampling
1. Simple Random Sampling
is the best type of probability sampling
through which you can choose sample
from a population.
# assures the same opportunity
# chance or opportunity
1. Simple Random Sampling
1. Have a list of all members of the
population, write each name on a card, and
choose cards through a pure-chance
selection.

2. Have a list of all members, give a number

to member and use randomized or unordered
numbers in selecting names from the list.
Systematic Sampling
Chance and system are the ones to
determine who should compose the
sample.
For instance, if you want to have a
sample of 150, you may select a set of
numbers like 1-15, and out of a list of
1,500 students, take every 15th name on
the list until you complete the total
Stratified Sampling
The group comprising the sample
is chosen in a way that such group is
liable to subdivision during the data
analysis stage. A study needing
group-by-group analysis finds
stratified sampling the right
probability sampling to use.
Cluster Sampling
This is the probability sampling that
makes you isolate a set of persons
instead of individual members to serve as
sample members.
For example, if you want to have a
sample of 120 out of 1,000 students, you
can randomly select three sections with
40 students each to constitute the
sample.
ACTIVITY

In pairs or small groups, decide which

sampling method would be most suitable
for each scenario and explain your choice.
Each group will share their answers and
discuss the reasoning behind their
choices.
