physics car safety

The document outlines key principles of vehicle safety through the lens of Newton's Laws of Motion. It describes four critical safety features: crumple zones that absorb kinetic energy, seatbelts that prevent occupant movement during a crash, airbags that deploy rapidly to cushion impact, and advanced braking systems that maintain control. Together, these features enhance occupant protection in the event of a collision.

Newton's Laws

• Newton's First Law: Objects in motion stay in motion unless acted upon by an external force.

• Newton's Second Law: Force equals mass times acceleration (F = ma).

• Newton’s Third Law: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.
Feature 1: Crumple • Designed to deform during a
crash to absorb kinetic energy.
Zones • Increases the time over which
the vehicle comes to a stop,
lowering the force on
occupants.
• Protects the passenger cabin by
sacrificing the front/rear
sections.
Feature 2: Seatbelts • Prevent occupants from
continuing forward due to
and Restraint Systems inertia.
• Spread force across strong parts
of the body (chest, pelvis).
• Pretensioners tighten the belt
instantly during a crash.
Feature 3: Airbags • Deploy in ~0.05 seconds after
collision detection.
• Inflate using a rapid chemical
reaction.
• Provide a larger surface area to
reduce pressure and decelerate
the body more gently.
Feature 4: Braking • Prevents wheels from locking
up, maintaining traction and
systems steering control.
• Allows the driver to steer during
hard braking.
• Uses feedback systems and
sensors for precise braking
control.
