Lesson 9_ Earth on the Move-Rester 2024

The document outlines an educational activity focused on understanding Earth's movements, tilt, and their effects on seasons. It includes true or false statements regarding Earth's orbit and sunlight angles, along with analysis questions about seasonal changes in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres. Additional resources for further learning are also provided.

Statement True or False? Explain your
reasoning in a complete sentence.

True
Earth is closer to the Sun in
December than it is in June.

The orbit of Earth around the Sun False

is circular.

False
Only the Northern Hemisphere has
seasons.
Statement True or False? Explain your
reasoning in a complete sentence.

The effects of Earth’s tilt are far

more significant than the distance
from the Sun when determining
the reason for the seasons.

When it is spring in the Northern

Hemisphere, it’s fall in the
Southern Hemisphere.
The following diagram shows why the angles
of sunlight hitting Earth’s surface in summer
and winter affect the amount of energy
transferred to a location on Earth’s surface.
Statement True or False? Explain your
reasoning in a complete sentence.

When sunlight hits Earth more

directly, it heats Earth’s surface more
than less direct sunlight does.
The parts of Earth tilted toward the Sun have
longer days so there is more time
for the Sun’s energy to heat Earth’s surface
than when those parts of Earth are tilted
away from the Sun. This diagram shows how
Earth’s tilt can affect the amount of daylight
hours at a given location.
Statement True or False? Explain your
reasoning and/or use text evidence.

If the Sun was out for more than

12 hours in the Northern
Hemisphere, then the sun would
be out for less than 12 hours in
the Southern Hemisphere.
Activity 9 Analysis Questions
Question Answer

Explain how Earth’s tilt and orbit around the sun cause changes in
the angle of sunlight hitting Earth’s surface.

Explain how Earth’s tilt and orbit around the sun cause the seasons
to be opposite in the Northern and Southern hemispheres.

In the northern hemisphere, the seasons go in the order of winter,

spring, summer, fall. What are the order of the seasons in the
southern hemisphere?

The Cassini mission sent a spacecraft to Saturn. One of the goals

of the mission was to learn more about the seasonal changes
observed on Saturn. Even though Saturn receives about 1% of the
amount of sunlight as Earth does, it still has seasons. Why do you
think Saturn has seasons?
