Digestive System

The document provides an overview of the digestive system, detailing its organs, processes, and functions in breaking down food, absorbing nutrients, and eliminating waste. It outlines the five digestive processes: ingestion, digestion, absorption, assimilation, and excretion, along with the roles of various organs such as the mouth, stomach, and intestines. Additionally, it highlights the importance of the digestive system for overall health and includes questions for assessment.

are not? Who am I?
I am in your tummy. I am pinkish, I
look like a sack. Who am I?
The junks that you eat and cannot
digest are shown by me their way
out.
Fun Fact!
Don’t you know that women took
significantly longer to digest the
food than men!
 At the end of the lesson, the
student will be able to:
 Define digestive system and its
digestive processes
 Describe the functions of each organ
 Recognize the importance of digestive
system in the human body.
LET’S EXPLORE!
THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
THE DIGESTIVE SYSTEM
 The digestive system is a group of
organs that work together to break
down food, absorb nutrients, and
eliminate waste to provide energy and
support bodily functions.
5 DIGESTIVE PROCESS
 INGESTION- taking in food
 DIGESTION- breaking down food into
nutrients
 ABSORPTION- transferring nutrients
from digested food into the bloodstream
 ASSIMILATION- process of using those
nutrients for energy, growth, and repair
in body cell.
 EXCRETION- eliminating undigested food
and waste products from the body
Food can be broken down (digested) in one of two
ways:
1. Physical Digestion
This is where large pieces of food are broken
down into smaller pieces of the same food
2. Chemical Digestion
This is where food is broken down into a different
substance that can easily pass into the blood
Mouth
 Digestion starts here.
 Foods taken into body
are chewed here in
order to be swallowed
easily.
TEETH
Incisors
These cut and bite food
Canines
These grasp and tear food
Pre-molars
These grind and chew food
Molars
These also grind and chew food
Functions of Saliva
 It lubricates food with mucus, making it
easier to swallow.
 It contains the enzyme salivary amylase,
which acts on cooked starch turning some of
it into maltose.
 It keeps the mouth and teeth clean.
Esophagus
 Serves as a
pathway for food
and liquids from
mouth down to
stomach.
STOMACH
 It is a J-shaped,
elastic organ.
 A muscular organ
that breaks down
food using digestive
acids and enzymes.
SMALL INTESTINE
 Long coiled tube

 Break down food using digestive

enzymes and absorbing nutrients
into the bloodstream for energy and
growth.

LARGE INTESTINE
 Absorb water forming solid waste, and
eliminating undigested food from the body.
RECTUM
 Final section of the large intestine where
waste is stored before elimination.
ANUS
 The opening at the end of the digestive tract
where waste is expelled from the body.
ACCESORY DIGESTIVE
ORGANS
 Organs that help break food, but are not part
of digestive canal.
 Salivary gland, liver, gallbladder, and
pancreas.
Salivary Gland
 Makes saliva which helps in chewing,
swallowing, and keeping the mouth moist.
LIVER
 Produce bile which helps break down fats in
the small intestine, and for processing
nutrients absorbed from food.
GALLBLADDER
 An organ under the liver that stores bile.
PANCREAS
 Produce digestive juices to, which help break
down food in the small intestine.
Mouth
Esophagus

Liver Stomach

Gall Small intestine

bladder

Pancreas Large intestine

Anus Rectum
IMPORTANCE OF DIGESTIVE
SYSTEM
 It helps break down food into nutrients that the body
needs for energy, growth, and repair.
 It absorbs essential vitamins and minerals to support
overall health.
 It eliminates waste and toxins, keeping the body clean
and functioning properly.
 It is white. Some are sharp some are not?
Who am I?
 I am in your tummy. I am pinkish, I look like
a sack. Who am I?
The junks that you eat and cannot digest are
shown by me their way out.
1. What is the first process of
digestion?

A. Absorption
B. Excretion
C. Ingestion
D. Assimilation
2. What is the main function of the large
intestine?

A. Absorb nutrients
B. Store bile
C. Absorb water and form waste
D. Digest proteins
3. How does the digestive system
work to process food in the body?
A. It stores food in the stomach indefinitely.
B. It breaks down food, absorbs nutrients, and
removes waste through a series of organs.
C. It sends food directly to the bloodstream without
digestion.
D. It only uses the intestines to process food.
4. After food is ingested, it travels down
the ______, where it is then broken down
further in the ______ before nutrients are
absorbed in the ______.

a) Esophagus, Stomach, Small Intestine

b) Mouth, Large Intestine, Stomach
c) Stomach, Esophagus, Small Intestine
d) Small Intestine, Stomach, Large Intestine
5. Which is the correct order of food movement
through the digestive system from ingestion to
excretion?
A. Mouth → Esophagus → Stomach → Small Intestine → Large Intestine
→ Rectum → Anus
B. Mouth → Stomach → Esophagus → Small Intestine → Large Intestine
→ Anus → Rectum
C. Mouth → Esophagus → Stomach → Large Intestine → Small Intestine
→ Rectum → Anus
D. Mouth → Stomach → Large Intestine → Small Intestine → Rectum →
