CEL 665 Lecture 7B Crash data management IV

The document discusses road traffic safety and the use of collision diagrams to analyze crash data and improve safety measures. It highlights the importance of using historical data for effective before-and-after analysis of road safety interventions. Additionally, it provides examples of data sources for creating collision diagrams in various locations, including Delhi and Michigan.

Application of Road Safety Analysis
Why collision diagram?

Utility of collision diagrams
Collision diagrams are a very illustrative tool for the
comparison of the accident frequency before and after the
implementation of a particular road safety measure.
The minimum length of the “before-and-after” period
considered in any ‘before/ after’ analysis should be at least 3
years.
WHY?
 Long: Ensure maximum reliability
 Short: Ensure responsiveness to change in crash patterns
Thumb rule ~ previous 3 to 5 years data
 With 3 years as a working minimum

What else do we need?
