Bhawna and Dimpy Final

The document discusses the principles and theories of growth and development, particularly in relation to craniofacial growth. Key principles include Enlow’s Expanding ‘V’ Principle and Counterpart Principle, which explain the patterns and relationships of bone growth. Various theories such as Genetic, Sutural, and Cartilaginous theories are explored, highlighting their significance and shortcomings in understanding craniofacial development.

FACTORS AFFECTING GROWTH
SIGNIFICANCE OF GROWTH
IN FUTURE TREATMENT OF
THE CHILD….
Principles related to craniofacial
growth
The two Most important Principles Include
1. Enlow’s Expanding ‘V’ Principle
2. Enlow’s Counterpart Principle
ENLOW’S EXPANDING ‘V’ PRINCIPLE
• Many facial bones or parts of
bone have a 'V' shaped pattern of
growth the growth movements
and enlargement of these bones
occurs towards the wide and of
the v as a result of differential
deposition and selective
resorption of Bone.Bone
deposition occurs on the inner
side of the wide end of the 'V' and
the bone resorption on the outer
surface.-base of mandible -ends
of long bones-mandibular body -
palate...
ENLOW’S COUNTERPART
PRINCIPLE
• The counterpart principle of
craniofacial growth states that
the growth of any facial or
cranial part relates specifically
to other structural and
geometric counterparts in the
face and cranium.

GENETIC THEORY
(Brodie in 1941)

 Genes determine
everything.

 Growth is controlled by
genetic influences and
is pre programmed.
SUTURAL THEORY
(Sicher and weinnman in 1947)

It states that craniofacial sutures generate the tissue

separating force during growth pushing apart the various
bones of the craniofacial complex.

Paired parallel sutures attaching

facial areas to the skull pushes
the nasomaxillary complex forward
and downward.

Cranio-facial growth occurs at the

sutures.
The cranial vault grows by
the expansive proliferative
growth by sutural connective
tissue that forces the bones
of the vault to move away
from each other..
SHORTCOMINGS: (SUTURAL THEORY)

⊸Transplantation of suture to another site: no growth

thus indicates lack of innate growth potential.

⊸Microcephaly and hydrocephaly raised doubts.

⊸Growth at sutures responded to outside influence.

Presented by Suvin Chaudhary

GROWTH CENTER GROWTH SITES
Location at which independent growth It is merely a location at which growth
occurs occur.
All the centre of growth are also sites. All the growth sites are not growth center.

Growth initiators Growth adjusters

Generate tissue separating force No tissue separating force.

They pushes apart various craniofacial New bone is formed if they are pulled
complex. apart.

CARTILAGINOUS
THEORY
James scott (1950s).

⊸It states that intrinsic growth controlling factors are present in

cartilage and periosteum with suture being only secondary.

⊸Cartilaginous sites through out the skull

are primary centres of growth.
⊸Mandible is described as a long bone
with a horse-shoe shaped diaphysis with
condyle representing an epiphyseal plate.
GROWTH OF MANDIBLE IS A RESULT
OF CARTILAGE PUSH FROM GROWTH
AT THE CONDYLE.
