Factors Affecting Photosynthesis

Photosynthesis is the process by which plants convert sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide into glucose and oxygen, primarily occurring in chloroplasts that contain chlorophyll. This process is essential for providing energy to food chains and oxygen for respiration. Factors such as temperature, light intensity, and carbon dioxide concentration can influence the rate of photosynthesis.

Lesson Outline
What is Photosynthesis?

The Importance of Photosynthesis

Chloroplast and Chlorophyll

Photosynthesis O2

Photosynthesis is a chemical process by

which plants create carbohydrates using light
energy. C2
O
Plants make food by photosynthesis. ‘Photo’
means ‘light’. ‘Synthesis’ means ‘making’. So,
photosynthesis means ‘making with light’.

Question?

Is photosynthesis an exothermic or endothermic reaction?

Answer!!!!
Photosynthesis is an endothermic reaction, which means that light energy must be
absorbed, together with water (H₂O) and carbon dioxide (CO₂), for the chemical
reaction to take place.
How Plants make
Food?

H2O
In photosynthesis, plants use:
• water, which they get from the soil
• carbon dioxide, which they get from the air
• energy, which they get from sunlight
Site of
Photosynthesis -
Chloroplast
Photosynthesis takes place primarily in the
leaves of plants, specifically within the
specialized cell structures called chloroplasts.

Chloroplasts are organelles that contain

chlorophyll, the green pigment that captures
light energy from the Sun.
Photosynthesis
In the process of photosynthesis, the absorbed
light energy converts carbon dioxide and water
into glucose, with oxygen released as a by-
product.

Questions
1.What are the reactants in photosynthesis?
2. What are the products in photosynthesis?
3. What is the site of reaction for the process of
photosynthesis?
Why is photosynthesis
important?

• All the energy in all the food in the world

comes from plants. A food chain shows us
how this energy is passed along from one
organism to another.
• It provides oxygen for the Earth’s
atmosphere. Animals and plants, of course,
need oxygen for respiration.
Try this!
3 The picture shows a lizard eating a
grasshopper. Grasshoppers eat
grass. Explain how the lizard relies
on photosynthesis to provide it with
energy.

4 Explain one other reason (apart

from food) why the lizard would not
be able to survive if there were no
plants on Earth.

Chlorophyll
• Chlorophyll, found inside chloroplasts,
captures sunlight energy for photosynthesis.
• This energy helps carbon dioxide and water
react to form carbohydrates and oxygen.
• Leaf cells have the most chloroplasts,
making them the main site of
photosynthesis.
• On sunny days, excess carbohydrates are
stored as starch in chloroplasts.
• A starch test can show if a leaf has been
photosynthesising.
Questions??????
??
1.Where is chlorophyll found in a plant cell?
2.What is the role of chlorophyll in photosynthesis?
3.Which part of the plant has the most chloroplasts?
4.Why do plants store starch?
5.Do all plant cells photosynthesize? Why or why not?
Summary

Photosynthesis involves converting sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide

Photosynthesis into glucose and oxygen. Biomass is the organic material produced
through photosynthesis.

Chloroplasts, organelles within plant cells, are where photosynthesis

Chloroplasts takes place. These structures contain chlorophyll, the pigment
responsible for capturing light energy used in photosynthesis.

Temperature, light intensity and carbon dioxide concentration all affect

Factors affecting
photosynthesis rate. Optimal conditions enhance photosynthesis, while
Photosynthesis
extremes can limit it.
