Day 1: Introduction to Computer

Networks
Fiber Technician & Wireless Hotspot
Training
Presented by: Evans Kirimi Arandu
What is a Computer Network?
• A computer network is a group of
interconnected devices that can communicate
and share resources.
• - Enables sharing of files, internet, printers
• - Can be wired or wireless
• - Examples: Home Wi-Fi, Office LAN
Types of Networks
• 1. LAN (Local Area Network): Covers small
area like a home or office
• 2. WAN (Wide Area Network): Spans large
areas like cities or countries
• 3. MAN (Metropolitan Area Network): Covers
a city or large campus
Key Networking Devices
• - Router: Directs data between networks and
to the internet
• - Switch: Connects multiple devices within a
LAN
• - Modem: Converts data between digital and
analog for internet access
• - Access Point: Extends wireless coverage
How Data Travels in a Network
• - Data is broken into packets
• - Packets are sent through the network to
their destination
• - Devices use IP addresses to identify each
other
• - Protocols like TCP/IP manage communication
Summary
• - A network connects devices for
communication
• - LAN, WAN, and MAN are common types
• - Routers, switches, and modems are key
devices
• - Understanding how data flows is crucial for
technicians
