02 - Neurons and Neural Communication Notes

The document discusses the structure and function of neurons, including their parts and how they communicate through neurotransmitters. It also presents a case study of a patient, later identified as Robin Williams, who experienced various symptoms leading to a diagnosis of Parkinson's disease. The document encourages discussion on mental health awareness and appropriate responses to those in distress.

 Get your bag with your parts for your neuron.
 Grab a white board and create a neuron with the following:
 Dendrites
 Cell body
 Axon
 Myelin sheath
 Axon button
 Synapse
 On your white board explain how a message is sent from
one neuron to the next.

How Neurons Communicate
• Synapse
• Synaptic gap (synaptic cleft)
• Neurotransmitters
– Chemicals that travel through
neurons to communicate a
message.

With your table
You will be attempting to identify the potential
causes of symptoms listed in the medical report
for your unidentified client.

Part 1: list all of the symptoms as recorded by

medical reports

Part 2: Use your neurotransmitter chart to identify

the Neurotransmitters that are involved in this
patient's diagnosis
Disease progression
Before the patient was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, they had experienced a wide array of
symptoms that seemed unrelated, according to the editorial.

By October 2013, Schneider said the patient had been experiencing constipation, urinary difficulty,
heartburn, sleeplessness, insomnia, a poor sense of smell and stress. In addition, they had "a slight
tremor in their left hand that would come and go," but at the time, that was attributed to a previous
shoulder injury, she wrote.

At the end of that October, the client developed gut pain, and their reaction was "markedly out of
character," Schneider Williams wrote. " fear and anxiety skyrocketed to a point that was alarming,“

"acute paranoia and out-of-character emotional responses he was having,"

"loss of memory and inability to control anxiety was devastating,"

a continuous tremor in their hand and a slow, shuffling manner, according to the editorial. Terrible
insomnia and began having trouble judging distance and depth, Schneider Williams wrote.

 What was your reaction when you

learned it was Robin Williams.
 Whatcan you do when you know
someone is going through a mentally
tough time?
 What is not appropriate to do?
