General 2D Sketch tips
• The sketch is the
foundation for
creating a 3D
feature.
2
General 2D Sketch tips
• SOLIDWORKS
provides the
ability to create
2D or 3D
sketches.
3
General 2D Sketch tips
• A 2D sketch is
limited to a flat 2D
sketch plane
located in the
FeatureManager,
a reference plane,
or face.
4
General 2D Sketch tips
• When you create a new part or assembly, the
three default sketch planes (Front, Right and
Top) are align with specific views.
– The plane you select for the Base sketch
determines the orientation of the part.
5
General 2D Sketch tips
• Example 1: Keep your Base Sketch
simple:
– View a simple Base Sketch.
6
General 2D Sketch tips
• Keep your Base Sketch simple:
– Not this.
7
General 2D Sketch tips
• Example 2: Keep your Base Sketch
simple:
– View a simple Base Sketch.
The plane or face you select for the Base sketch determines the orientation
of the part. 8
General 2D Sketch tips
• Example 3: Keep the Base Sketch
simple:
– View a simple Base Sketch.
9
General 2D Sketch tips
• Example 4: Keep your Base sketch
simple.
– View a simple Base Sketch (body of
the valve assembly.

General 2D Sketch tips
• Add geometric relations,
then dimensions in a sketch.
– This will keep the user from
having too many unnecessary
dimensions.
• Implicit relations applied by the system.
• Explicit relations applied by you.
• Apply dimensions.
– Smart Dimension tool.
11
General 2D Sketch tips
• In SOLIDWORKS, it is not
necessary to fully define
sketches.
• You should fully define
sketches before you
consider the part finished
for manufacturing.
12
General 2D Sketch tips
• The color of the sketch indicates the
sketch status.
– Light Blue - Currently selected.
– Blue - Under defined, requires additional
geometric relations and or dimensions.
– Black - Fully defined.
– Orange/Red - Over defined, requires
geometric relations and or dimensions to be
deleted or redefined to solve the sketch.
13
General 2D Sketch tips
• Under Defined. There is inadequate
definition of the sketch. Missing relations and
or dimensions. Color - Blue. The
FeatureManager displays a minus (-) symbol
before the Sketch name.
14
General 2D Sketch tips
• Fully Defined. Has complete
information (relations and dimensions).
Color - Black. The FeatureManager
displays no symbol before the Sketch
name.
15
General 2D Sketch tips
• Over Defined. Has duplicate relations and
or dimensions. Color - Orange/red. The
FeatureManager displays a (+) symbol
before the Sketch name. The What’s
Wrong dialog box is displayed.
16
General 2D Sketch tips
• The SketchXpert PropertyManager provides the ability
to diagnose an over defined sketch to create a fully
defined sketch. If you have an over defined sketch, click
Over Defined at the bottom of the Graphics window
toolbar. The SketchXpert PropertyManager is displayed.
Click the Diagnose button.
• Select the desired solution and click the Accept button
from the Results box.
17
General 2D Sketch tips
• Model about the origin. This
provides a point of reference and
lowers the number of needed
dimensions.

18
General 2D Sketch tips
• Rename a sketch or feature to
improve clarity.
19
General 2D Sketch tips
• Use Symmetry. When possible
and if it makes sense, model
objects symmetrically about the
origin.
• Even if the part is not symmetrical,
the way it attaches or is
manufactured could have
symmetry.

General 2D Sketch tips
• Check out the below video showing some tips
and tricks using sketches.
• One topic covered in this video is how to
modify the existing sketch plane.
• Others tips that are covered are changing the
color of a sketch for easy identification as well
as using multiple contours in a sketch.
